alright, i need some help:
1) im going to start off by writing rules on posting in the prog forum. thats a simple part. later id like some proofing and appendices. thats on me, as far as im concerned.
2) i need you guys to put up LINKS to compilers. java and the c-family compilers are what id imagine to be the most important, but ANY valid language, as long as you can provide working links to it.
3) ill put up a link to PHP: main, but what do you guys think about linking to off-site php tutorials (pixel2life, etc). your call really, but i think that takes away from this forum, which is counter-productive.

OK, the main thing I think we want to emphasize is the following:
- When posting a question, make it specific. Provide as much detail as possible.
- Keep AS questions to the Flash forum
- Don't ask people to write full scripts for you unless you are willing to pay
2) i need you guys to put up LINKS to compilers. java and the c-family compilers are what id imagine to be the most important, but ANY valid language, as long as you can provide working links to it.
I'll let someone else handle this one.
3) ill put up a link to PHP: main, but what do you guys think about linking to off-site php tutorials (pixel2life, etc). your call really, but i think that takes away from this forum, which is counter-productive.
I just started a section for these in PHP: Main. Maybe keep it just in there? That way the sticky only links to Newgrounds related threads, but they can find other resources within PHP: Main.

Though I can understand the reasoning of this thread by the Subject, you might want to explain why you made this thread.

Because we're trying to put together a sticky once and for all for the programming forum.

I posted a thread like this months ago. Everyone contributed, we made a solid sticky, sent a request to several admins.... and still no sticky.

Well let's do it again, and this time we'll all see to it that it gets done if James wants it to happen.

I don't think I remember this. I remember the first time the question arrose, when James came by the thread and said we should revise the sticky, and write it in a different manner, but we never sent it to any admins.

So people dont bombard us with .tk freewebs shit.
Webhosts:
Cankoo.com (Pay Per Click)
admhosting.net (Paid)
Crystalhosting.nett (Paid)
Serverseed.com (Paid)
)
Explain about freewebs though, and how its good for starting off with web programming.
Also, you might wanna give www.w3schools.com a mention, since its a great starting point for programming.

I don't think it should have web hosts.
Web hosting is a very specific thing, and depends on your needs. If someone wants a host, they should ask about it, and tell what they are going to be doing.
I say no list of hosts.

THE PROGRAMMING FORUM STICKY (first draft)
please revise it... help me out folks. ill write the final draft, but tell me what i need to change and add/remove.
Rules:
1) THIS IS NOT THE FLASH FORUM. Sure, by loose definition, ActionScript is a programming language, but this is not the location for questions about that. Even though most users in this forum are qualified to answer your questions about Flash, they will not, and you will be directed to ask your question in the Flash Forum.
2) Provide every detail you can. Sure, you may not think that your operating system has anything to do with why your C++ compiler isn't working, but the more information you provide, the more likely you are to get the answer you need. Any programming-related questions should probably include what compiler you are using and what the purpose is behind your code snippet you are showing. Any hardware-related questions should include your computer's specifications (NOTE: You will probably recieve better answers about computer problems if you go to the WI/HT? Forum).
3) Do not ask for people to write code for you, if you are not offering money up-front. Either prove that you are making an effort to write the code yourself, and ask for help, or offer money for someone to do the job for you. Most users on the Programming Forum have their own projects, and are not willing to put everything down to create an applet or website for you, unless there is money involved.
4) PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE. If you are coming to the Programming Forum because you need a quick response, you are coming to the wrong place entirely. The Programming Forum does not have a large enough base of regulars to provide immediate responses. Be willing to wait a few hours for your thread to be read and responded to.

Looking nice, but maybe one fix:
Any programming-related questions should probably include what compiler you are using and what the purpose is behind your code snippet you are showing.

Um, you should bold the beginning of the rule, so people read it and it stands out.
Looks good so far...
Forum).
And that's a nice one. I probably wouldn't just spot out C++ though.
Nice, i like that rule. lol

Great, except that the list above is totally (well, not totally) unorganized. lol, nevermind. You should add PHP editors and HTML editors as well, and maybe even Visual Developer (ASP.NET/ASP editor)

there are no "rule names". the beginning of 1 and 4 are just important things to read, not titles.
And that's a nice one. I probably wouldn't just spot out C++ though.
you cant build a rule like that without examples, and im certainly not giving an example for every single programming language.
Take out the *: part. It makes me and others (newbs) confused.
instead of saying "no", give me a suggestion of how to rewrite that line.
Great, except that the list above is totally (well, not totally) unorganized. lol, nevermind.
i agree that its disorganized. im gonna need some help with that part. i dont know how to shape it up, really. maybe ill add some information about each one after the title. itll make it look fuller, and therefore more organized.
You should add PHP editors and HTML editors as well, and maybe even Visual Developer (ASP.NET/ASP editor)
PHP, XHTML, HTML, and ASP (as far as i know) can be written in a text editor. i provided a list of text editors. i dont know what more you want, other than for me to rewrite the same list 8 times with 8 different headings...

authorblues, I don't think it's disorganized. I mean I think I like it.
I think it would REALLY help if James can give some suggestions of what he wants in it. I think that's what we need, but I'm not sure if it's going to happen. It doesn't seem like he comes around this forum that much anymore. I guess he's very busy.

someone should shoot him an email.
a bit of an offtopic note, the version of the sticky on my computer, Neill Silva is a link to his GG profile. i know thats irrelevant, but its unnessary to put his name if theres no link.
