well, strictly speaking the persona of a punk is that of a rebel teen with no set rules and very politically opinionated, typically about personal freedoms and is constantly out living life, getting as much life as possible at one time.

and then there's the nerdy hackers, who are recluses with no social opinions aside from the fact that they don't fit in very well. quite adapt to being alone for hours looking at a machine.

though, the cyberpunk writing genre is quite awesome indeed. I just like the play on words.

some rebellious hardcore hacker....heh.

sure, you can't get much more hardcore than hacking a script into the metaverse that allows you to hack other avatars to pieces...

...you know, without having a fucking nuke attached to your motorcycle

Great, I've been involved in some breaking news for a change :)

I just bought The Last Continent and ordered Feet of Clay

Feet of Clay was excellent. Pratchett certainly has a way with whodunnits, even when the main character doesn't know how they did it or indeed what it was that they dun.

Yeah, the metaverse reminds me a lot of if the internet knocked up an MMORPG and the bastard child was the Metaverse. I'm not a large cyberpunk genre reader, as snow crash was pretty much the only one that I read in the genre. I would imagine he picked up his idea from many places throughout his life. I'm sure the sci-fi genre has played around with an idea like the metaverse. I can recall something like the holo-deck on startrek...maybe a startrek novelette had the holodeck connected with other ship's holodecks via subspace frequencies...but I can't tell you if that idea was before Snow Crash, as I know that the idea didn't pop up until The Next Generation TV series.

But it's sort of amazing how close of a future Snow Crash depicts..what if capitalism goes haywire and starts gobbling up all the land and housing? what if technology fucked and breeded until MMORPG style things were the internet. It seems even more of a nearby future today than it did in the 90s when the internet was only emerging and video games were side scrollers.

Hooray! Once I've finished The King Beyond The Gate, I'm going to make a move towards Pratchett again. I just don't know how I'm going to approach it this time... yet

Yeah, which is why that book reminds me a lot of Farenheight 451, it draws a picture close future even though it was written some odd years ago. And if both of the futures they describe are fairly similar in a way.

To be honest, I think that the Aussie stereotype is a pretty easy going one, compated to some of the stuff they say about the English, especially when it comes to cricket.

I always think of London when Ankh-Morpork pops up in the series...crony old wizards, old streets, an "underground" that showed up in Men at Arms

I posted on this topic before and was invited to join and then forgot about it, sorry

...

I'llst all of the discworld books that I have

main series: got em all (looking forward to the book 'Making Money')
science of discworld revised edition (had to order it from england, I'm gonna get the other two sooner or later)
all of the kids books except for wintersmith and where's my cow
the last hero
the art of discworld
the streets of AnkhMorpork
I also have both animated screenplays, but I've only seen one (the soul music cartoon did not do the book justice, so I didn't bother to watch the other one)
that's about it, I did at one point rent the bromeliad trilogy and STRATA from my local library and I have the new edition of good omens, Terry Pratchett has a unique writing style which in comprable by other authors,he can't be beat, and still I wonder why discworld never really caught on here in the US even though it's been out for years while relatively crap harry potter steals the show, I don't get it

I think that's what Pratchett based it on. You've also got references to the stench of the river in "The Great Stink" of 1858

What more reference do you need?

Welcome back

main series: got em all (looking forward to the book 'Making Money')

As am I.

science of discworld revised edition (had to order it from england, I'm gonna get the other two sooner or later)

I've got to get around to reading SoD II - The Globe at some point.

all of the kids books except for wintersmith and where's my cow

I've read the Tiffany Aching series, but the only book I own of that series is "Where's My Cow"

the last hero

Great pictures

the art of discworld

Same

the streets of AnkhMorpork

My brother's territory, with the maps - he has them all.

I also have both animated screenplays, but I've only seen one (the soul music cartoon did not do the

book justice, so I didn't bother to watch the other one)

I loved Soul Music, it's not the best of portrayals, but I watch it like the Blues Brothers - for the music.

I've also got an official copy of Hogfather on DVD. That's pretty damn awesome.

I read about that on wikipedia, I want to see that, (let me guess, it is PAL only and my DVD player is NTSC only, oh crap) sometimes I wish all countries would use the same format so problems like that wouldn't arise, do you know what I mean?

...

and now to return to my default activity, lurking around at sonic crew and complaining about sega

I'm quite wary of books like that and the Discworld Companion, as they tend to evolve over time, making the original ones almost useless, since extra plot has been added.

True on that one.

I would buy the art books though I think...

I would like to buy the most recent companion, as I enjoy reading what another reader interpreted while reading it, and they have some extra information as some references that Pratchett makes are totally over my head and most times I bet they go far over my head.

Thanks to the link in Coops sig, i found my merry way down here. I love the Discworld series! I'm currently about halfway through Pyramids, which i am late about 6 month on my return date to the library ^__^. I try to read them in somewhat correct order, but it's hard as hell to find the really early ones.

After reading the first books, i kind of miss Rincewind :P He's such an awesome character.

If you're stateside check out Borders, or any other large book store. It is buried in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy sections.

I always go to borders myself, they usually have them, and the only time I've had to special order was for Feet of Clay which is what I'm reading now.

next up for me is Hogfather, but I won't get it until I've finished Feet of Clay because my fiancee will read it before I have a chance. I should buy her The first few that I don't already own, because I tried going the library route as well...and they never have the full series. I tried with the Sandman graphic novels as well, but that ended up with me trying to get Inter-library loaned books and they always came up as collaborative efforts Neil did with other artists on different graphic novels.

Nope, European. And that major book stores here only have 3 or 4 of his latest books in stock, and almost always half of them are from the Bromeliad series :S

I always go to borders myself, they usually have them, and the only time I've had to special order was for Feet of Clay which is what I'm reading now.

Special orders and such is an issue with me being under 18 and frankly, i've never had any experience doing so. I'm just being patient and searching for the naxt book in the series in any book store i come across.

next up for me is Hogfather, but I won't get it until I've finished Feet of Clay because my fiancee will read it before I have a chance.

She's a fan too, or just enjoying an occasional read now and then?

Man, there isn't a single person i know of personally, where i come from, other than myself, that have read any of the books in the Discworld series, :(

Discworld is huge in Britain, I know that. not-so-much in the states.

Special orders and such is an issue with me being under 18 and frankly, i've never had any experience doing so. I'm just being patient and searching for the naxt book in the series in any book store i come across.

All borders did for me to special order was to take down my name and a phone number. when it got to the store, they called me up and told me it was there. didn't cost any extra since it was already in their warehouse.

She's a fan too, or just enjoying an occasional read now and then?

she loves the comedy in them a lot. we've read half of a novel to each other just because every time one of us would laugh, the other would want to know at what.

Man, there isn't a single person i know of personally, where i come from, other than myself, that have read any of the books in the Discworld series, :(

people who read them love them, and people who haven't read them usually never heard of them.
