I plan to start from the ground up. I am working on a short story about a homicidal group of carpet salesmen, albinos, midgets, and necrophilia. Kinda weird, but its turning out alright.
Also, I find it to be good writing exercise when you try and narrate your life as you walk through the halls or whatever.

This thread is made of WIN.

just finished "moving pictures"

it felt a little too over the top. like it was too obviously mocking the real world.

but all in all it shaped some of the wizards a bit more, which feels like a theem in eric, moving pictures and reaper man. I also enjoyed the differences between alchemists and wizards. and it really was a fine book, it just had a weird feeling. holy wood and moving pictures and suchlike, donno.

reading reaper man now. i like this one already. i'm about 100 pages in so far and as i've said already, i enjoy the books with Death in it, and this explains events in soul music better because i read that one out of sequence. next up, lords and ladies

Why not try some of your material out in the Writer's Guild or Late Night Lounge?

Soul Music feels like this too, but I quite like this style of pardoy that Pratchett writes. Especially the way he plays on the names - United Alchemists, for example

Yes, especially the Dean. I did see in the Hogfather adaptation that he still wore the robe with "Born to Rune" written on the back in studs

I like how even though you don't really need to read all of them to read any certain one out of order, there are still small things and patterns and references to other books (especially in soul music) where you don't feel like pratchett is making your mind into jello with explaining everything over and over again, because if you've read the other books it makes mention of in the text, you notice it. and if you haven't read any of them, then you don't feel like you've missed out on anything.

Though, i may need to read soul music, interesting times, and small gods again just to make sure when i get to them on the list, since I've already read them.

He gives it in brief detail when he recaps for you in the future books.

With the discworld books, I've read most of them 2 or 3 times each, with the later ones only once, since I've not let them fade from my memory yet.

i dont know why but my memory for books is very good, i generally don't read books more then once. but if i feel like i missed something, i may read it again. i read plays a few times though. i think that stems from doing drama and competing in speech tournaments in high school. and i sometimes just like to memorize good monologues in plays

i've yet to read any discworld more then once. then again, i'm usually trying to get through the next one only an hour after i finish the one before it. either way, as i said, i may read some of the out of order ones i've already read again so that i can catch the circle of plot going on

though i did like the little preface pratchett put in the begginning of witches abroad about the story arch with magrat, granny weatherwax and nanny ogg - if i had just picked that one up out of no where, i would have been pissed about the lack of character developement in the early chapters (though, granny's constant developement and explination as a character is always good for a laugh)

In my younger days (You know, those days when I'd have 7-8 hours a day of free time, before I got a job and a girlfriend, and an addiction to World of Warcraft) I did managed to read through the whole series of Discworld (it only went to Hogfather back then) in about 10 weeks. That's about 2 books per week.

A good explanation as to why you can't always read the books as stand alone titles.

well. on yet another topic of this erm...topic. i picked up Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson again

i got it for my fiance to read, but she's still lurkign around in six other series, not to mention the half read books from discworld i got her into. either way, i was fed up and i opened it...and next thing i knew, i was a quarter of the way through...so i stopped reading witches abroad and kept going with Snow Crash.

it's a great near future satire. written though the late eighties and printed in the early 90s, it is a really awesome and somewhat frightening and almost inspiring read. awesome because of the story line, scary because of the disintigration of the united states and the complete control of capitalistic enterprises. mini nations the size of subburbs thorughout california control everything, and inspiring because of how awesome the concept of the itnernet is in the book. think RPG video games, except each person has the ability to buy space on the server and building their own home or business. make avatars which look like you, etc...

it's just a must read for any computer sci-fi geek

I'm on Black Hawk Down and then I'm considering branching out into crime, mysteries and thrillers, before Pratchett brings out the next one.

This may sound incredibly sad, but I am working on voices, so I'm reading Wintersmith to my girlfriend, giving individual voices to each character. One day I'll get a mic and find a way to upload them.

Well, if I get this mic of mine, I'll have to join in with you on this one

still in witches abroad and considering picking it back up again.

So long as you don't start singing "Ding dong, the witch is dead", you'll be alright

i overheard some other students in english class talking about how they're parents were obsessed with pratchett and how they had read almost every discworld. i wanted to jump into the conversation and give them the link here...but i bet that would have been a little weird of me. either way, we do need a few more folks. or at least get a few more fans to come back.

i have my girlfriend reading some of the books, but she's not a big internety person. i mean, she has her niches in the net, but she doesnt venture far from yahhoo mail and myspace. so yea

It's a nice portrayal of the South, because Pratchett missed out any blatant references to the KKK.

I think I feel a relevant quote coming on here:

"You can't give her a sword, it's not safe!
IT IS A SWORD, THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SAFE
But what if she cuts herself?
THEN I WOULD CONSIDER THAT TO BE A VALUABLE LESSON"

I'm going to go and watch that now, Hogfather is funny... a wierd bit of Irony is that Ian Richardson's last role was as the voice of Death... Everyone's a critic, aren't they?

Its more fun to run over there and act entirely oblivious as to what is going on, and while you're at it, speak in a very thick southern accent. "YALL KNOW DEM DERE POLES IS ON FIRE?!?!?!?" or "What're dem dere white sheets on yall's heads for???" or "SWEET JESUS!!!! GHOSTS!!!!"
Or, one can also have some target practice with a non-lethal ranged weapon (for me it was a potato cannon). And just to prove how stupid they are, they still keep coming back.

Awesome idea for a club. Right now I'm about halfway through "Thud!" and Pratchett once again brings all the elements that make Same Vimes my favorite discworld character. He is just so at home among the craziness of the Watch. I also laugh out loud every time when Vimes and Lord Vetinari have a conversation, it's friggin hysterical the things the way they choose their words around each other.

thanks, i think it's an awesome idea as well. feel free to stop by as often as you want!

i love Lord Vetinari, he's always got some master plan going on that is just over the horizon. I especially enjoyed in "guards guards" when he was imprisoned under his palace and made sure his dungeon was made to keep him safe inside, and still had his secret ways out.

his development with vimes is also really interesting, how their characters play off eachother in conversations. I look forward to watch books.

I'm still in the midst of "Witches Abroad" but i'm nearing the end. i think the next one i have to pick up is "Lords and Ladies"

i wish i could meet with pratchett...i dont know what i'd say to him

do any of you guys know what you would ask pratchett about discworld or otherwise if you had a chance to just pick his brain for an indefinite amount of time?
