Alright i finally picked up one of the novels, I have no clue as to what the backstory is, but this is one in the City Watch series. I believe the title is Thud, if anyone has some opinions about the novel please share.

This thread is made of WIN.

Ok, In order to understand all of the plot hooks leading up to THUD!, I'd suggest that you read Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo and The Fifth Elephant, as they are the first few books of the Watch progression and will give you some depth of character for Vimes, Carrot, Colon and Nobby, amongst others.

since i'm attempting to read them all in chronological order of events in the discworld, its hard for me to find any real list that is difinitive, grant it when pratchet makes a new book it may change, but is there any internet page that has a realitively up to date list. because in the backs of the books it winds up missing previos books or future books.

Sam Vimes is one of the Discworld's most finely crafted chracters, he was introduced as a drunkard captain of the citys then night watch, at that time the watch was just like another gang, and one way down the pecking order at that.

The stories chart his rise from poverty to prosperity. He still think he retains somthing of the dark in his soul and is forever trying to fence it off. He is the type of man who and a recovering alcoholic keeps a half bottle of whisky in his desk drawer as a permant test.

I think that this snippet of conversation between the leader of AM and his cleark sums him up perfectly

"tell me, if you had an achaint quasidimentional thing of pure vengance on one side and Sam Vimes on the other would you care to wager, say one dollar?

No Sir I wouldn't, that one looks like it's going to the judges"

Coop's Pratchett list
The Colour of Magic (R)
The Light Fantastic (R)
Equal Rites (Wi)
Mort (D)
Sourcery (R)
Wyrd Sisters (Wi)
Pyramids (S)
Guards! Guards! (Wa)
Eric (R)

Reaper Man (D)
Witches Abroad (Wi)
Small Gods (S)
Lords and Ladies (Wi)
Men At Arms (Wa)
Soul Music (D)
Interesting Times (R)
Maskerade (Wi)
Feet of Clay (Wa)
Hogfather (D)
Jingo (Wa)
The Last Continent (R)
Carpe Jugulum (Wa)
The Fifth Elephant (Wa)
The Truth (DIR)
Thief of Time (S)
Night Watch (Wa)
Monstrous Regiment (Wa)
Going Postal (DIR)
THUD! (Wa)

Key:
(Wa) Watch progression
(D) Death Progression
(Wi) Witches Progression
(R) Rincewind / Wizards Progression
(DIR) Discword Industrial Revolution
(S) Stand alone Story May contain vital plot to later books

That is my comprehensive list of the books labeled as Discworld Novels. This of course does not include the spin off series about Tiffany Aching and Granny Weatherwax (Wee Free Men, Hat Full of Sky and Wintersmith), or the Science of Discworld Trilogy, which gives a hugely different perspective on the world itself. Making a total of 36 books listed for Discworld here, but if you count the maps, the cookbook (!), companions and quizbooks, that number is slowly approaching 50.

I really enjoy all of the watch books, and i've grown to know Fred Colon, Nobby Nobbs, and of course Sam Vimes. Absolute awsome. Also, I was shocked to see that, when I looked at the list of City Watch books, that I had read all of them. AWSOME! But I wish there were more...

The Death books are also highly entertaining, and death reminds me of vimes in a way.
Unfortunately, I simply don't enjoy any of the Witch books, and I haven't read nearly enough Rincewind.

And, a final note, For those wishing to become acquainted to the series, I recommend the dicworld Omnibus's, or Omnibii, or whatever. They Each contain a three select stories, and each omnibus is devoted to a particular subject. So far, I have found the Watch Omnibus, the Death Omnibus, and the Gods Omnibus, but I'm sure there are more.

I have bought every single Discworld novel ever printed in paperback, so I'm lacking THUD!, but that will be with me for Xmas.

All I did was put them in order on the bookcase and read them off from there (publishing dates and ISBNs can be supplied upon request.

The problem with the Omnibus editions are that you only get three novels in them, where the series are much longer in most cases.

Sam Vimes is a great character, but I prefer Carrot, the most unsung hero in the history of Discworld. He should be king of Anhk-Morpork, but he's happy being a policeman

Personally, I wouldn't bother, as Discworld will continue to evolve as time goes on.

I know it sounds mornid, but buy one when Pratchett dies, as then it won't become obsolete

I'd like to be that brit!

But seriously, he'd need to pass the rights over, like Anne McCaffrey did with her Dragons of Pern Series

As would every Pratchett fan with even the smallest bit of writing talent.

But seriously, he'd need to pass the rights over, like Anne McCaffrey did with her Dragons of Pern Series

Or, you'd just need to get permission off his living relatives. However, I don't think anybody else writing the Discworld novels would work very well.

There's a part of me that thinks it's slightly sacreligious to even think about someone else writing about the exploits of Rincewind, the city watch, the witches and every other wonderful character that Pratchett has created.

A thought has jsut occurred to me...

Any chance you lot could have a read over, and vote on, this short story?

I was aiming for a Pratchettesque style, not sure I did it very well though, and seeing as you lot all like this sort of thing, I figured you might either enjoy it or be able to point out some ways in which I could improve it.

So if you get time to have a glance over it, it would be most appreciated.

i started out by reading the colour of magic, and it's the reason i even looked for more of the discworld books. luckily my highschool had light fantastic as well.

they are interesting and as witty as any of them. clearly the original is always good, or else there wouldent ba any series...they are partnered books, so you gotta read colour of magic then light fantastic to get the end of that story line dealy...though the story line as a base pops up thorughout the series ive noticed

Well, they are the best place to start, as it gives a great insight to the satirical land of the Disc and how the fabled city of Ankh-Morpork works

Well, I can purchase THUD the game over in the UK, so you should be able to pick up one in the States

Great book. I started reading Discworld with Men at Arms some 11 years ago and I've not looked back.

Trust me, you need to make some time to read, even if it's just for 30 mins a day - just before bed is a great time for me, for some reason.

I tried that, maybe that's why I didn't do too well at English in school - I'd spend the occasional hour in there reading Pratchett or Julian May (She was on of my favourites during my later school years) and never seemed to concentrate on the book we were studying

my english teacher loved me because i was the worste possible student to have in english. i understood things and am myself a writer, not to mention i have realitively well rounded analytical skills (my spelling sucked). but i was an ass about assigned reading. i was always reading gaiman or pratchett and she didn't like it. so i kept going on about the awards each has won. i read through the lists of "banned/challenged books) just to mess with her...and i kept complaining that most authors really dont set out to have the meanings we're apparently finding in class...one day i'd love to be a famouse writer with world changing books...just to go around to highschools and explain that NO, in fact i didn't mean that when i wrote about something...kid's you're teacher is dead wrong...go play a game of Thud
