I'd argue against that reasoning. Everything is relevant because everything affects something else. But, i'm not that worried about your sig so don't take it as me critisizing you. My one point is that every little thing that a person sees will effect him/her and how they percieve the place. Since pictures are much more attractive to the eye than text, people will notice your sig first before your post.

As for the state of the bbs, I generally agree that with the current trend, or rather consistant unchanged trend, there will be no explosion of intelligent growth on our beloved bbs. It isn't, however, that no one intelligent comes to newgrounds. You, I, and others disprove that theory entirely. It has more to do with what kind of person is going to stick around for the forums.

In fact, most animators have above normal intelligence. IQs generally range well above 110 for the average animator. Why don't we see a lot of animators? Because they are animating. Forums are for discussing, not drawing. And further, most animators don't want to deal with the hassle of having fans or "haters" whenever they come to talk about something unrelated.

But then there are also intelligent people who come to view flash. Why don't we see them here? Perhaps because they are intelligent enough to find other more productive or social ways of wasting their time. The internet attracts a lot of people, but the people that stick around generally aren't the most loved by society. Sure there are some who do a lot out there, but in their off hours they generally can't find anything better to do than post or navigate the internet.

You also have to think about how a user would find the forums, or why they would be motivated to come to the forums. Upon first glance, the only motivation is a few buttons and an offer to talk about flash in the portal on the left hand side. Most users that come here have a question, and a lot of the time its because they've broken a rule on another part of the site or don't understand how the site works. People who have understood the site and havn't broken rules have less of a motivation to come here. Still some do, but a smaller (maybe not significantly) portion of intelligent people make their way here than idiots.

Now we come to the final reason our site is the way it is in my opinion, choice. As soon as you come here, the bbs, you have a choice. You either post or you don't. If you are just curious, you read first. Maybe you see the rules, but you probably are more interested in whats being said. Being attacked by viciously stupid topics you either laugh, agree, or realise just how stupid this place is and then you leave. Or you find one original topic that interests you and you stay. Or you are an idiot and everything seems funny and you stay. And maybe, just maybe a couple of pictures prominent on the bbs influence your decision one way or the other.

It is a very complex decision, full of twists that happens over seconds or hours. The current state of things obviously has the largest impact on what kind of people remain. As long as the state remains unchanged for any significant period of time, the kind of people that come in and ultimatly stay won't change either.

The method of changing things is completly unclear and possibly impossible to find. Stricter modding is one alternative, but just deleting all the crap you can find is a temporary solution to a current problem. Deletion does about the same thing. Even though you remove current idiots, the new ones have already been influenced. The small crop of regulars that stay are usually somewhat intelligent, but far too few or worn out to really be able to make a difference on their own and moderators, some of the "best" users on the site are busy cleaning it up instead of necesarily contributing the way they used to.

The only possible way to change things is for enough people to suddenly decide to change and lead by example. Extremely strict moderation would also help, but might not be enough. Its extremely unlikely.

I don't know what to do about it all. I'm all in favor of a higher quality bbs with better threads and a somewhat more mature and intelligent conversation status. I just can't see it ever really happening. I make an effort to make a couple good threads with some sort of consistancy. Sometimes I fail in the effort and part of the problem is that I'm constantly putting forth effort that sometimes I can't think of anything and end up posting something stupid or something that doesn't appeal to enough people to make a difference.

So basicly, we could keep the status quo with out much of a problem, but change would be difficult and probably unappreciated leading to lots and lots of strife for users who don't want to change. A gradual change which I didn't talk about would be difficult without constant persuasion.

Thats fine.

The mods shouldn't spend all their time having to explain their bans to everyone they ban. I know I get a constant stream from users asking why they were banned, etc. We don't have time to look into all their bans. If we had to answer them all we'd get rid of the forums. People need to realize the site is to busy and there is to much going on for us to deal with everyone's bans. If you're banned, you're banned. Deal with it. It may not always be fair, but everyone tries to be fair and sometimes mistakes happen, learn to live with it.

This I don't necessarily agree with. A one on one conversation I do agree with every user would be a waste of time. I do feel with proper ban explinations this could be solved, but rather than make them later, make them at the time of the ban, site the rule or the thread that gives the authority. Then I wouldn't mind if it were anonomous. In fact it would cut down on users who hate specific mods for being banned by them.

You can't expect people to be rational when their form of entertainment is taken away from them. Newgrounds main purpose to most users is to entertain them, whether it be with flash, music, or the forum. They won't take a ban lightly because it is like a parent telling them they can't go out and play. And you have to realise, a lot of the people who suffer these things are the kids who throw tempure tantrums because their mommy and daddy said they couldn't ride their bike at night or go to a party with that special boy/girl. For that reason you can't assume they will just understand the site is busy.

Everything in their mind is for them personally and 100%. You don't matter to them, no one else does. They are all selfish to the end. As much as this site is yours, they've been given the impression that they have rights because they can express themselves through reviewing, voting and posting. They feel, as do I, that I have some say in what goes on here. The difference may be that I ultimatly know who is in control and why I actually am owed nothing by the site while a majority of users think they deserve everything they can get.

I'm straying though. The point is, they aren't going to deal with it silently unless its explained very clearly in a way that doesn't insult them.

Hmmm, there are only 3 ways I can of to get the forums running nice and sweet.

1) Only one account per I.P address.
This would stop people using ALT accounts getting around bans and it would stop people using ALTS to spam the forum with shit on purpose.

Get rid of the general forum
By having a flash forum, politics forum and Wi/Ht forum, you're only going to attract people interested in thoises topics posting. Any other topic such as ''Do you like foxes'' will be deleted becasue it's not going to fit in with the above genres.

Paid forum subscription.
It's quite self explanatory . Why are people going to pay a fee just to post aload of crap.

I used to post bull shit topics and I did spam the forums with alt accounts. I guess I grew out of it becasue well it's boring? I now enjoy having serious conversations and I now enjoy post in the politics forum and debate in serious topics, it's more fun I guess.

But it would inevitably deny users from signing on to newgrounds. ISPs like AOL assign multiple users to multiple IP addresses because they ran out of room. As it is now, even if I could load the movies in the portal, which I can't thanks to anti-virus software, I would have a hard time voting because those restrictions are in place on voting. Not being able to make an account because someone else did causes a problem.

Furthermore, many people share computers at home, syblings and parents alike. Cutting them off because their brother has an account is unfair. And anyway, anyone who was making an alt who really wanted to cause damage would use a proxy to get around that rule anyway. It just wouldn't work.

There are some things worth talking about that don't fit in those categories. As "good" as this appears to be to you, it isn't and I don't feel I need to explain further.

And what about people who are intelligent but can't afford it. Or what about people who are stupid but have money? Just because there is a fee in place doesn't mean anything would be corrected, thats just an assumption on your part.

But you would never have gotten to the point if you weren't given the chance. Your ideas are extreme and not thought out, possibly because you havn't looked at all the facts or havn't realized there are some facts you didn't take into account about accounts.

Seeing as this is a forum open to many people, the Bulletin Board System might not gain intellect if the users start gaining it. There are always new people coming here each day and may be somebody with intellect are not. So it will never be fully intellect, but it can be tolerated.

You say this, but most NG members are surprisingly smart. Soem users are amazingly witty and can come up with a funny response for anything, some users have amazing political discussions in the politics setion, some just seem to have a good grasp on life from their wrintings. This is a great forum. I think you are just referring to general. Sure you see your fair share of stupid young ones, but for the most part, a good 90% of the users here are amazingly smart, they just hide it behind a mask.

Yes, a rant about how people are stupid on the BBS is just what the BBS needed

Let me add my two cents.

I think MANY of you fail to realize what sort of intellect is being talked about. We aren't talking about curing cancer or solving the mystery of the cosmos, we are simply saying you should stop typing shit like "OMG MARIO IS SUCXXX". Just because it's the internet doesn't mean you shouldn't ATTEMPT to use proper gramar and punctuation. Make an attempt to sound like you aren't mentally challenged.

The majority of my rants come from the stupidity I see from the BBS and the majority of the things I use as "real life examples" are total bullshit. Why? Because no one is possibly THAT dumb in real life.

I mean, you should atleast hold yourself to some sort of standard.

That and that smart threads that are well drawn out, like an essay, maybe 10 people will read. Everyone else will skim through or ignore. Make a post saying "I got raped" and you'll pull in everyone.

While the forum change can't occur in a day, Wade needs to lay down ground work first.

I don't know Earfetish...

Looking through THIS thread, I see more well thought out posts than retarted ones. =D

I've used the analogy tons of times before:

Using the NG BBS is like panning for gold in a river of shit.

But now there are actual changes being very seriously addressed by the staff.
The regulars and vets are calling for these changes as well.

I have faith that the shit will be less putrid and the gold more plentiful in the coming months. NG is growing along with its community. For the better.

I Promise.

Fancy a game of chess? Go here and message and/or challenge 'Zerok'.
The solution to the BBS' issues. (Must read first 8-9 pages though).

Finally. Someone shedding some light on the GOOD things about the Newgrounds community. It seems like all we've heard is "omg these new rules suck" "omg the ng bbs is going downhill". But what you said is great to hear. I was getting pretty upset. I mean I like this forum, and it seems people we're just starting to count it out.

Kudos to you.
