Bin Laden, Omar still alive 2003-02-24 12:33:59 Reply

Osama bin Laden and Mullah Mohammed Omar, former leader of the Taliban movement, may be hiding out in the mountainous regions along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Afghan foreign minister said Monday.

"My perception is that both men are still alive, perhaps in the border areas," Dr. Abdullah, who goes by one name, told The Associated Press.

He said "eventually, they will be caught ... because they do not have popular support in Afghanistan."

Bin Laden, the head of the al-Qaeda terrorist network blamed for the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States and other acts of violence in Asia and Africa, has not been seen since the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan that ousted the Taliban regime that had given him shelter.

But Afghan officials have repeatedly said they believe he and Mullah Omar are alive. Audio tapes with a voice purporting to be bin Laden's become public in November and earlier this month, and U.S. officials said each time they believed the tapes to be genuine. Statements have also been released in Mullah Omar's name, though their authenticity could not be confirmed.

Abdullah, who with President Hamid Karzai is attending a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, said Pakistan and Afghanistan were cooperating in attempts to eradicate al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants from the border regions.

"Both governments agree that the re-emergence of al-Qaeda and Taliban would not be in anybody's interest and we have discussed ways to prevent that," Abdullah said.

He predicted that the militants would try to take advantage of a war against Iraq to mount attacks and energize their movement.

"Certainly the extremists would like to provoke terror in Afghanistan," he said. "They would like to capitalize on that opportunity to destabilize the situation."

They've been hiding for more than a year now. It's old news. We're focusing on Saddam now!

SHHHHHHHH!!! Don't you know you aren't supposed to mention OBL? It makes Prince George look bad so neither you or any of the news stations can talk about it.

It's not war with Iraq at the expense of war on terror....

I think the reason you don't hear much about Osama is that there really isn't much to report about him. He's probably hiding somewhere in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, and we still have troops in the area, looking for him. If and when we find him, it will certainly make headlines, but for right now, all we are hearing about is the next target, Saddam. Rest assured, we may have turned our immediate attention to Saddam, but we have not forgotten about Osama.

Or because Bush doesn't want us to remember all the unfinished business he left before he caught Saddam out of the corner of his eye.

Osama isn't gonna get killed or be caught no matter how much the masses want him to because the U.S. needs him alive

Plenty of people speculate Osama's still alive, and plenty that he's already dead. It'll be hard to kill him, though. One man aided by millions to escape through an intricate network of tunnels has to be difficult, even if you are the Special Forces.

Maybe if George got over his attention-defecit disorder and focused on one guy at a time, things would get done.

No argument here, Judge. Maybe if he could make cohereant decisions through that haze of coked-up daydreams, we'd all be better off, no?
