Wow I haven't seen a plea for civil talk on ng since... well I signed up. Anyway claymation must count. I love this one
What an interesting topic. A nice wholesome discussion of flash and the flash community.
Alot of discussion about Adam Phillips and whatnot. Now Iove Phillips work, but I'm annoyed people whining the story isnt good. He's making these like a movie. He's not going to cram the entire story in the first 3 episodes.
But honestly, and I'm not trying to be a suckup either, I think, when it comes down to raw smooth animation, with the best movement and fluidity, there are 2 flashes I think are the best of the best on this website.
One is Luis's Pico vs Convict which has amazing grace, weight, and follow through in all the motion to where it looks better than Cel animation. And the other one is The Purple Tree Squirrel which I think has gotta be one of the most underrated cartoons on here.

However, I am firmly someone who enjoys a cartoon that moves me, more than one thats exciting.
A cartoon that can make me laugh, make me think, or make me shed a few tears will always be more important than one thats just full of chaotic action.
Personally when it comes to animation that made me just stop and go "wow, that was incredible" not because of the animation, but because of the message and emotions the animation brought forward.
Thats why some cartoons are more memorable than others. Thats why Looney Toons, Ren and Stimpy, and alot of Disney oldschool films will never lose their quality.
Because not only are they well animated AND funny, but they make you see the comical side of human nature and can oftentimes be gutwrenching!
A cartoon that can make you laugh, or cry, over and over, in my mind is a success.
My eyes always get a bit watery when I watch Sullivan hug Boo seemingly for the last time in Monsters Inc or when Nemo and his Father come together, or when Stimpy is trying to make an animated cartoon and Ren is literally tearing his dreams and art apart. THATS ACTING!
And when it comes to Newgrounds flash that is both funny AND moving at the same time, I think these four are the most powerful. Not because they are the best in the visual department or because they have cool slick character designs or any of that other stuff. But because they make you FEEL SOMETHING.

The first one is routine. Its a silly romp through a guy's extremly boring life and when he suddenly realizes he's in a rut.

Afterliving I think is also one of the most underrated cartoons on Newgrounds. This cartoon makes my eyes squirt every time.

From My Room.
Most of you have seen this one, but its one of the few internet cartoons that really makes your heart skip a beat from REAL fear from the mood conveyed.

Los Dias sin Dias.
I think just about everyone has seen that one.
But there are other great ones. Like the Autumn Tree and others.
But I cant list them all now, I've written enough.
i gotta say that Fitch + Jove is one of my favourite series. Fitch + Jove isnt that popular and i saw episode 5 part 1 when i first visited the portal after getting my account, theyre pretty good and the authour tries to rplie to all the reviews which you dont see often. though they need a series section but i dunno how that will happen. some of the things in it are pretty stupid though but i like them and they dont seem to get a lot of views either because there are barely any reviews there too...
which reminds me, i gotta change my favourites.
we need some freash and origonal mlovies not like starwars:Madness because that starwars
so we need peoples own ideas
Just had to get this thread back up. theres too many movies i haven't seen that you all know individually!
And the other one is The Purple Tree Squirrel which I think has gotta be one of the most underrated cartoons on here.

MAN! that movie got 4th place!
im starting to like this thread even more. i have never seen such unique flash animation quality before.
please do send more!
I for one have been an avid animation viewer since flash broke on to the scene back in the 90's! Since then animations have gone from xiao xiao stick figure fight scenes to much more complex animating and artistic skilled authors such as Adam and Tom.
I have to say I have been a little disappointed in the progression of the community since I would have expected a lot more fully featured cartoon series to be developed by now. The xombie series is by far one of if not the best active series. With honorable mentions to illwillpress's foamy series.
I think one of the biggest problems is the fact that animating is tedious like that other dude pointed out. It takes a long time to develop a quality animation plus storyboarding and voice overs. I for one would love to see cartoon series that are developed on a bi-weekly basis that span out in time between 15 to 20 minutes long. Possible? Yes, but not until we get more groups of talented authors willing to work together and share the acclaim and awards for such a series...

The main problem is not that people arent willing to share the time and effort, its that this is the internet. If you are an animator you cant live off the internet. We have jobs and other things to support ourselves that take up all our time.
Hell, if you just wander around deviantart or newgrounds flash communities you will find dozens upon dozens of people with great ideas for tv shows.
And they'd be able to make them, too. But they dont have the funds or time to do such things.
College and being alive is expensive.
And the few websites out there that DO sponsor animators dont make or give nearly enough cash to support the flash community. Being paid 50 dollars for a cartoon that took you months to make? 50 dollars? Just to pay the bills alone takes more than that.
But thats just how things are.
And until some large sponsoring company comes along, or tvnetworks start actually getting interested in what amazing things the internet is developing, then it will continue to be this way.
Hell. I'll use myself as an example here.
I have like 4 different series I've wanted to do floating around in my head. Why havent I made them? Because I have a job. Its the only way for me to feed myself and pay for college (and barely at that). The second problem is, there is a lack of professional voice-actors out there on the net who could help.
90% of "voice actors" available to help flash animators are 12-16 year old kids who can only imitate ridiculous sounding anime voices.
The only way to be able to use your art to keep yourself afloat online is to have a large fanbase and a buyable merchandise.
HomestarRunner for example. Its been around for a decade now, has a monstrous fanbase, and all sorts of stuff they sell based on the characters. Stickers, shirts, toys, etc etc.
The Brothers Chaps live on that. They have the money to have their own website and server, run it, and make cartoons all day!
Thats great. But almost noone else can afford (or will be able to ever afford) those luxuries.
Thats just the way the internet is.

I'm not kidding, I know the animation is subpar but the fact of the matter is he puts a ton of effort into storyboarding and voice acting. I also admire him for keeping the series up for ao long...
This thread is amazing, especially zekeys links. The purple tree thing was awesome

i agree, and i aint got nothing to say about it.
but, just like in life, if you just complain or question everything, you'll never see the brightest side of it all.
personally, i feel the best thing is to just choose what you want. whether you feel like dedicating, not dedicating or just looking at other peoples flash movies. cause if you dont, youre always gonna have negative questions about it all.
i chose to aim to be the best. whther im not or will never be, i enjoy challenging myself through you fellow animators

That's probably the best way to look at this. As with any art medium, it is the duty of the artist to try to improve his technique with each piece of art. The artist should only be concerned with his growing skill, not the ability of others.
I have only recently managed to get a copy of Flash. Thus, I have only made a few short flashes. But each time, I have attempted to improve on them. The best Flashes, in my opinion, are those that are made with the desire of the artist to improve on their ability. Don't ask me how, but I have a tendency to know when they have.
SOZ MAN, dont know this song
