Dont bother reading this if you dont plan to help in any way...thanks.=)

I was snooping around looking at the music in Ng... And i was thinking of making some of my own. I have a Cakewalk program, but if you can(dont think so)make music straight from that, it is extremely confusing, especially for a little 13 year old like myself.xD

Where can I get a midi instument that I can plug into my computer, and how much would a decent midi synth/keyboard cost?

Do any or most normal instruments have an outlet that you can connect to the comp?

If you have answers to these questions, thanks.=)

Hmmm... 'bout your last sentence, someone can have the answers to your questions, but don't have to give them to you... keep your thanks 'til later. :P

Here's a list of kits and keyboards to hook up into your comp. Not sure if they are good quality... I'm thinking about the full-size keyboard.

you mean like a guitar or keyboard?

I'm gussing for a keyboard maybe, but you may still have to get an adapter.

With a guitar no

most keyboards over $35 will have a Midi-Out. You'll need an adapter, though, because most of the computers now-a-days don't have a 5-pin DIN port on the back. A good place to start would be www.musiciansfriend.com. large selection and decent reviews.

Haha, if only people actually did this all the time. Imagine how much flaming and spam would be eliminated.

Anyway, you can get some bare-bones controllers for under $100. I would recommend getting one with 49 keys so you have a little room to move around on. I've got a portable 25 key controller I take with me places if I have a project I need to work on and man, is it limiting.

Since you aren't a pianist (or are you?), you could easily get by with synth action keys. Most untrained pianists prefer this as it's lighter, but most of the trained pianists I know swear by a keyboard with weighted keys (like a piano). If you have a moderate sized budget and want a full keyboard with weighted keys, go with the Casio PX-110/310. It has some of the best action I've ever felt on a keyboard.

Some things to look for are:

USB connection- this is very handy. It saves you the 50 bucks on a midi cable you would most likely need otherwise. Just get a USB cable and you're good to go (most keyboard controllers include one).

Bundled Software- People often over look the bundled software, but it can be worth it. I got an Alesis Photon 25 keyboard ($120) that came with Cubase LE. A few months later I upgraded Cubase LE to SX3 and saved $100. That almost paid for the keyboard! Bundled software alone can be enough to buy a controller, if there is a good enough package.

I know, thats why i posted that. ; )

And thats a good thing to know that it doesnt cost more then 200 bucks to get started... and no, Im not a pianist, but i guess with some practice, I can become one.=)

Got it. Now i know what I will need to get myself setup. Thanks everyone (The first sentance did keep spammers out.=) )

Or if you have a keyboard with a MIDI output, you can buy a MIDI to USB converter, it's probably cheaper than the actual MIDI cable, and most pc's dont come with MIDI inputs for which to plug said cables into. But all pc's nowadays come with USB ports

Midi cables that have the USB converter built into them go for around $50. A lot more expensive than you might think. I would suggest just getting a keyboard with the USB plug.

Or as I have, an external soundcard with ASIO support and midi/in out.
Both works.
