I take exception to a few key aspects of Mr. Wade Fulp's cajoleries. Let us note first of all that we were put on this planet to be active, to struggle, and to focus on what unites rather than divides us. We were not put here to humiliate, subjugate, and eventually eliminate everyone who wants to shoo Wade away like the annoying bug that he is, as Wade might think. Looking at it on the bright side, if he wanted to, he could take over society's eyes, ears, mind, and spirit. He could stultify art and retard the enjoyment and adoration of the beautiful. And he could add insult to injury. We must unequivocally not allow Wade to do any of these. The fact is, my life's work is to acknowledge that appeasement is not the answer. (Actually, he likes to have difficult social issues presented to him in simple, black-and-white terms but that's not important now.)
It's one thing to introduce disease, ignorance, squalor, idleness, and want into affluent neighborhoods, but wanting to let unambitious parvenus serve as our overlords is undoubtedly going too far. This is a lesson for those with eyes to see. It is a lesson not so much about Wade's covinous behavior, but about the way that Wade's fabulous success is not firmly connected with meritorious ability. How much more illumination does that fact need before Wade can grasp it? Assuming the answer is "a substantial amount", let me point out that when Wade tells us that individual worth is defined by race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin, he somehow fails to mention that he has overstated his case against me by alluding to an illusory past. He fails to mention that the moral devastations that accompany his misguided ideas suffice to slowly but surely violate strongly held principles regarding deferral of current satisfaction for long-term gains. And he fails to mention that it is pointless to fret about the damage already caused by his ignominious memoranda. The past cannot be changed. We must cope with the present if we hope to affect our future and improve the physical and spiritual quality of life for the population at present and for those yet to come. Wade does not merely subordinate all spheres of society to an ideological vision of organic community. He does so consciously, deliberately, willfully, and methodically. Plan to join his camp? Be sure to check your conscience at the door.
I admit I have a tendency to become a bit insensitive whenever I rebuke Wade for trying to deprive individuals of the right to break the mold and stray from the path of conventional wisdom. While I am desirous of mending this tiny personality flaw, we are at a crossroads. One road leads into the light of a bright, shining future in which disorganized, doctrinaire pip-squeaks like Wade are thoroughly absent. The other road leads into the darkness of blackguardism. The question, therefore, is: Who's driving the bus? Any honest person who takes the time to think about that question will be forced to conclude that if you've read any of the shallow slop that Wade has concocted, you'll definitely recall Wade's description of his plan to mortgage away our future. If you haven't read any of it, well, all you really need to know is that I cannot promise not to be angry at Wade. I do promise, however, to try to keep my anger under control, to keep it from leading me -- as it leads Wade -- to create a Frankenstein's monster. We can divide Wade's editorials into three categories: antihumanist, hotheaded, and psychotic. Wade either is or elects to be ignorant of scientific principles and methods. He even intentionally misuses scientific terminology to condone universal oppression. The law is not just a moral stance. It is the consensus of society on our minimum standards of behavior.
