How exactly does a music genre die?

In retrospect of it demand or purpose.
Such as Jazz use to be a huge hit, tell me, how many new jazz bands and hits do you hear on the radio? virtually none unless you got the occasional jazz station.
Loads of genres are pretty much dead with the very exceptional band who wants to reminince. Which usually don't pull it off so well trying to balance fame with it.
Like thrash metal is a dead genre, since the only band still playing it are bands still around from the 80s.
Punk is dead for 2 reasons. the music didnt just die out as a phase per se as a type, but the message it brought was about the UK, which was argued about american goverment later. It involved, or tried to involve, a movement with its music.
Which no one cares about anymore..So ya, genres don't die in the retrospect it will be wiped from the earth, but "new" versions of it, wont exist, or be bastardized, or depending on the genre, generic.. unless you get some magical band to come out.

Let me establish a few things:

1.) Punk was born about 1976/77

2.) The Ramones were not a punk band, they were rock. They said it themselves. Neither were the New York Dolls.

3.) Punk died in 1986. That's when Minor Threat broke up, Bad Brains turned reggae, and every other hardcore punk band either broke up or turned metal.

4.) NOFX has been pop-punk ever since they released "Ribbed", 1990. They were hardcore punk from 1983-1988.

5.) Anti-Flag has never been a punk band, and never will be. Pop-punk sucks.

6.) Neither are the Distillers

7.) Or The Casualties

8.) OR The Buzzcocks (first pop-punk band ever)

Trust me, The Sex Pistols shot it in the head before it was even born.

PS: This is what the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.
PPS: Stop saying The Sex Pistols were the first punk bands. You're embaressing yourself and your loser group of friends who listen to The Offspring.

If you weren't such a dumbass you'd know that thats not the only punk band. The casualties and Dead Kennedys still do shows.

Public Image Ltd. is awesome. He reforms the wrong band for tours. :(

There are plenty of groups about today who continue to play what was once called Post-Punk. Groups such as Les Georges Leningrad, Cure, Throbbing Gristle, Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, etc.

Of course, that's wherte all these Indie bands trace their lineage to. Groups such as Gang Of Four and Smiths.

Of course, I like all sorts of music and am by no means a musicologist, but this is what I have gleamed from years of reading liner notes.

Well the problem is, that it splintered into so much stuff.

Look at Indie, that comes from Post-Punk that came from Punk.
Industrial and Goth are just types of Post-Punk.

So many bands were worried about the scene becoming increasingly poppy that they made Hardcore Punk.

Groups like Ramones and Buzzcocks are hard to find, that blurry line between being a punk band and a pop band.

I think Randy and The Hives manage it.

Grunge was like a crossover between Punk and Metal, according to what I've read.

What would that make bands like Discharge? :O

I find Musicology to be redundant anyway.

No, not the Prince album, that IS NOT redundant.

Punk lost all momentum as a legitimate social force for change and became just another fashion and music trend where everyone looks more or less the same (conformity) and everyone listens to more or less the same music (cultural atrophy).

Also, Vans Warped Tour.

I thought Crust was closer to Grindcore and Street Punk was Oi! (neither of which seem to address the music of Discharge).
