Yay. His death has yet to be confirmed by Chechen rebels, but let's boldly assume that the Russian media haven't started dancing too early. The Bin Laden of the Caucasus has fallen.
His profile says he used to have a Che poster hanging on his wall during his student years, but he has lately been more on the side of radical Islamists. I guess he'd side with anyone who could help him in his fight for an independent Chechnya, but the thing most people will remember him for will be the Beslan hostage crisis in which 186 children were slaughtered.
Shamil Basayev - loathsome terrorist or lovable rogue? Let's hear some opinions.

All he needed to do was pick up a rifle and shoot at Russian troops and try to convince other to do the same and I'd go for lovable rouge......

BASAYEV: MAJOR ATTACKS
October 2005: Scores killed in attack on Nalchik, Russia
September 2004: Gunmen seize school in Beslan, 331 deaths
August 2004: Suicide bombers destroy two airliners leaving Moscow, 89 deaths
August 2004: Suicide bomber kills 10 outside Moscow metro
October 2002: Moscow theatre seized, 129 hostages die
June 1995: Hospital siege, Budyonnovsk, southern Russia, 100 people killed
1991: Hijacks plane from southern Russia to Turkey to draw attention to Chechen fight for independence
i like how they put it as though it was the chechnyan rebels fault that all those hostages died in the moscow theater in 2002. the hostages died because the russians used some weird gas to anesthetize the rebels, unfortunately it worked on everyone and the gas did A LITTLE more than just anesthetizing the people.
anyway, even though i can understand that chechnya wants to be independent (or at least the terrorists think everyone wants it), terrorism is not something i can support. i mean, i could sympathize with it if they went against members of the government or people in economy only, like the RAF did (or tried to do), but if innocents die, its not cool anymore. so its proly a good thing that guy died, although it might not be very helpful. cuz now hell be a matyr.
