Hey I left Newgrounds when I started maturing about a year ago... But I was wondering if anyone here listens to any Indie bands? If so if you could name a few that'd be cool.

Yes, I have some.

From bands that the English press calls Indie (such as Franz Ferdinand), to small lable groups, to artists that only distribute on the internet, artists who never got a deal, artists who haven't released anything on any level and local charity singles.

Of course, where does it start being Indie? Where do the big lables start and the small ones begin? Are Mute an independant?

I am clueless, but I have a large enough music colleciton to say yes.

Bleak, epic soundscapes.

I know a lot of bands that might be Indie, but I have no idea how to tell whether they are or not.

Here's a list of bands that might be Indie:

Death Cab for Cutie
Silverchair
Of Montreal
Jack Johnson
Cake

The only bands that I'm really sure about there are Death Cab for Cutie and Of Montreal. Check them out, and you can check the others if you're curious.

Any one who isn't on EMI, Universal, Sony BMG or Warner Brothers (or one on a label owned by one of those) are an indie band.

In that case, I'd imagine most people listen to indie bands.

Most Industrial bands would be classed as Indie.

Not really. EMI, Universal, Sony BMG or Warner Brothers own about 70% off all record labels.

For instance Sony BMG owns all these smaller labels:

Brightside Recordings
BMG Latin
Bros Records
Columbia Records
Caribou Records
Epic Records
Legacy Recordings
Ode Records
Ravenous Records
RCA Music Group
RCA Records
Phonogenic Records
Arista Records/J Records
RCA Victor Group
RCA Victor Records
Bluebird Records
Windham Hill Records
Provident Music Group
Provident Label Group
Brentwood Records
Benson Records
Essential Records
Flicker Records
Beach Street Records
Reunion Records
Praise Hymn Music Group
Provident Special Markets
Provident-Integrity Distribution
Sony Discos
Sony BMG Nashville
Arista Nashville
BNA Records
RCA Nashville
Sony BMG Masterworks
RCA Red Seal
Sony Classical
deutsche harmonia mundi
Arte Nova Classics
Sony Music International
Sony Wonder
Sony Urban Music
Zomba Music Group
Battery Records
Epidemic Records
La Face Records
Jive Records
Music for Nations Records
Pinacle Records
Rough Trade Records
Silvertone Records
So So Def Records
Verity Records
Volcano Records
X-Cell Records
RED Distribution

If the light is green, the trap is clean.

I never knew it was that much. :o

I knew about the others, but I did not know that Sony owned Rough Trade.

I have a lot of CDs to look through to see and I have never really paid much attention to record lables.

I use to be in love with Death Cab, their older albums like We Have the Facts And We're Voting Yes and Something About Airplanes really have that Indie sound... but everything else was on Barsuk except their newest release, "Plans"... which I'm sure made them a fuck load of money as it was a major-release.

Yes, but now-a-days there's also a certain sound that comes with Indie bands. Don't get me wrong, they ALL sound different, but they are different in kind of a same way... if that makes any sense...

Hardly. Bad Religion sounds nothing like Rocco DeLuca and the Burden.

I ran into them at a gas station once. When I told them I knew who they were they offered me backstage passes to a concert festival in OH, but my parents wouldn't let me leave the state in their car.

The British media slap the title on any Gang Of Four-esque group.
