im set to go to iraq next january and over the past few months i have checked into the news every day and on alot of days heard the same damn thing
"and our top story tonight 2 more english soldiers were killed when a bomb went off today in the streets of baghdad"
im going as a regular soldier but rank can change due to exp in combat. and im thinking to myself:
"i dont want my kid to grow up not knowing her dad. or that her dad was killed by some bomb"
but i've already signed up and i cant back out now.
how could i get around this so that at least i know my body wont just be buried there and that i will have a life plan.
because as far as im concerned im going out there and if i die. it will be an expendable death.
and this doesnt just apply to me me me, i know that the same applies for other peoples families in america as well as here in Britain. i dont think its right or ethical that they may report it on the news but thats as far as their rememberance goes.
if anyone has suggestions or knows what happens to men and women killed overseas then by all means post here
discuss?
Dangan

First, let me say Thank You for your service. I have many in my family who have or are currently serving in the Military, some in Iraq.
I have to ask though, did you just realize there is a war in Iraq and people are getting killed? You can't turn on the news without hearing about it. I'm not sure why, feeling as you do, that you didn't sign up in the Navy or AirForce where the likelyhood of going to Iraq is much lower.
Lastly, I wish you the best and hope you stay out of harms way. If anything were to happen to you, I'm sure your family will remember you and trust me, the good folks in America will honor you.
It's really too late to anything now. Worrying won't do any good. Spend time with your family and enjoy what you have before you go.

Yeah, I'm either joining the U.S. Army or the U.S. Marine Corps. I'm also volunteering for combat, because of my personal views. I know right now it's an easy thing to say, but when it's crunchtime, I'll be scared to death on that battlefield. It will test me as a human being.
You still did an honorable thing, even if you do want to back out. I commend you, and I wish there were more men on this planet like you.
But, speaking on topic, the War on Terror has gotten out of hand. I'm not suggesting a mass pullout, but I am saying things aren't looking bright right now. I really don't know what to say; 200+ for the U.S. and our allies since February is a lot to stomache.

Just be really careful.
If you can, walk in large groups, dont go by yourself.
If you see a man running at you, shoot him. Better him dead and a civilian than you dead by bomb. Same with a car, if it looks odd dont take any chances. Try to avoid important buildings as much as possible and always look in upper windows for guns.
Dont be in the back of your group, or the front. Both of them are main targets.
Faith tramples all reason, logic, and common sense.

I'm not going to talk about the state of this war. My views are well documented. But the fact is that in war people die. If the current cause seems unnessesary to you then don't sign on.

How about you listen to your drill seargent because he most likely will know more information then a bunch of 15 year olds that don't even know the politics of this war.

This November, we'll have been in Iraq as long as we were involved in World War II.
After that, the only thing stopping us from setting a new record is Vietnam.

Also, after you accidently kill 15 civilians, don't try to cover it up. It makes you look worse on TV.

Not true. I'm signing on to releive those who have been three, four, and five times. It's not right for them to suffer. Besides, every able-bodied male, in my opinion, owes his country some stint of military service - via combat or otherwise. You owe it for you nation, even if you're not really defending the cause of freedom.

Suck my dick. Every country has cowards, AND heroes. You seriously need to grow the fuck up and stop judging a country based on the actions of a few. You know nothing about America, don't talk about it.

This war will turn into Vietnam. And that's not 100% my opinion. I've talked with veterans that have been there, done that, and the feedback from any of them shows that the military/political stage is set for similiar outcome.
Now, am I accusing these people of being militia/political geniouses? Not at all. But to see it firsthand, shows they have the experience to compare one to the other, and make an intelligible hypothesis.

Since when do troops go back to base and go "Hey, Im gonna go lay back and watch the CBS evening news with a cold brewski all while lounging in my easy chair after a long day of patrolling the streets of Baghdad?"
How the fuck does it lower troop morale when they dont see that shit? Would you rather deaths were NOT reported? Would you rather not deal with the fact yes, people DO die in wars? They ARE dying in a war our government bungled from the start?
And to tell you the truth, no, I dont lose sleep over troops dying. Not even when dozens die at once. If it makes me a worse human because of that, so be it. I understand shit will happen. But to count off thier lives of soldiers because it would "lower troop morale" is beyond retarted. It is fuckin pathetic and way to easy for someone sitting at a computer screen to say. Go tell grieving parents their sons story cant be told because it would "lower troop morale." Ridiculous.
On behalf of everyone who gives a shit about soldiers lives, I would like to present an apology to you for bringing you out of fantasy land. We are sorry to bring you to the hard truth OUR people are dying in a godforsaken shithole across the globe for a bunch of people he probably never even thought about before he was shipped off.

Screw that noise. My friends come back from Iraq telling me how they weren't allow bullets on patrol. My ass IS NOT stepping into a combat zone without enough ammunition to kill all of Russia.

Well let's just say you're more likely to die at home in a car accident then by some bomb or in combat in iraq. So if you're worried about your children in your future wich would you rather them look back on when they see your death: Being killed by an enemy doing something 90% of the people in the world today don't have the guts to do, or being ran off the road by some blonde bitch on her cell phone?
Our growing dependence on laws only shows how uncivilized we are.

As much of a shithole as anyone can call it...it's not that bad. Of course, this is just comparing to other US battles across the globe. The States have gotten soft over the years.

Are they soldiers, or Marines?
I can't beleive the army would be so Goddamn ignorant to do such a thing, let alone the Marines.
And that wisecrack was hilarious. XD

Oh no, protecting people from a rogue nuclear power with designs on Japan.
