Should blacks be paid because of slavery?

I say that just living in america is payment enough. Slaves who were brought over to america had some problems--I'm sure many of us have seen Roots . But so did millions of other people who live in america and have lived in america. But now they get their reward of living in america, where 99% of blacks have it better than 99% of blacks in africa.

What do you guys think? I really just want to see who is a racist and says yes. So for of against and why?

No, then the Indians would want money back too. they were offered a trip back to Africa after slavery was abolished and only some of them took it.

But i still dont think we should get payment for slavery. Thats fucking bullshit. No black person alive today had to live through the horrors of slavery. Some of us today still have to live through the horrors of the ghetto but thats another story. If a white family who is decended from slave masters wants to pay a black family who is decended from the slaves that the white family owned im cool with that. But i dont think the government should put together a shitload of money and give each black man, woman and child a check.

What the government, rappers, black movie actors, etc, should do is get some money together and use that to clean up the black ghettos of america.

I would understand paying the people who were actually slaves reperations, but they are all long gone.

While yes, for much of even the last century blacks and whites were not equal, we are fairly equal now, in some repects black people have advantages given to them over white people. So why pay them more?

Black people don't deserve reparaitions. Nothing happened to them, and anyone who says they "still feel their ancestors pain" is lying. Maybe you can understand and empathize, but you're not actually suffering. And even if you were, that's no place for money anyway. It's suffering, suffering is free.

I think they shouldn't, seeing how they themselves wern't enslaved but only there ancestors were. Another thing that would be a problem is that the people would have to prove that there ancestors were enslaved, because not all black people's ancestors were enslaved, and it would be very hard to prove. Then if they could prove that they had enslaved ancestors, to keep it fair they would have to only charge taxes to pay for this on white people. Seeing how my family has been poor since they came to america and never owned slaves, how would it be fair to tax us extra to pay reperation for slaves we never had.

Well, personally, I don't want my money being taken away even more so than it is now, and being spent to clean up the ghettos. Just like slavery, it's not my fault it's the way is it (My family didn't own slaves back then...im American Indian).

Reparations are not due. There was no mass killing.

However, if you want to do something better than reparations, let's rebuild the ghettoes. Improve the public schools and hospitals and so forth. And provide better college scholarships and/or loans (MORE PELL GRANTS!) from the gov't.

I think if they can provide documentation supporting that they are direct descendents of slaves, then it's fine. I'm Native American, and my tribe is very close to recognition. So I'm not going to lie to you. It would be hypocritical for me to say no, they shouldn't get reparations when my tribe could be receiving a large amount of money. However, we have worked years--since the 80s--on our recognition. My great grandfather was actually murdered because he was Native American. We have had to find papers on everything, despite the fact our villages were burned and most of us were murdered or enslaved ourselves. The Bureau of Indian Affairs actually turned down our last request because we had a tribal member have a baby in her late 50s, and they told us that was too old, find more evidence to support this. Some blacks living in America never were slaves. We had plenty of free African Americans up north. So all I ask is that they go through the same process my family has.

Do you realize how expensive reparations would be? The US is something like 12% African-American. Of that, let's say 8% are direct descendents of slaves. So, even $1,000 per person is going to cost $23,658,730,720.

Yes, but I'm proposing that they have to prove it...and I find it unlikely too many of them will spend time combing through microfilms, documents, and archives like we have the last 20+ years.

Seriously though, I don't think that african americans should be given money for what happened all those years ago (as bad as it was), but they should be given an equal chance in life - and effort should be made to stop negative stereotypes.

I'd be pissed if I had to considering half of my family was still living in Greece at the time, and the other half lived in the northern states that had done away with slaver shortly after they got to America from Germany. My ancestors owned no slaves. Why in hell should I ever pay that?

Well, I mean even if you took the "white" side of me, it didn't come to the States will around or after WWI. The only part of me that was even in the US during the whole slavery era, was Indian. My mom's side is where all the "white" comes in. But her family tree didn't come to America til around WWI anyway so how can they say I owe reparations?

Well, seeing as how family trees work, virtually every black person and many white people will be descendants of slaves. Take a random black person and assume, by some miracle, that he is not a descendant of a slave. Both of his parents would have to not be descendants of slaves. That is 2 people. Their parents, 4 people now, will have had to not be descendants of slaves. Their parents, that's 8 people now, will have had to not been descendants of slaves, and so on. By the time you get to the top, there must be 20 random people in America during the time of slavery, all of who must not be a slave. But, the chances of 20 random people back then not being slaves is gravely small. This also applies to any white person with a single black person in their family tree somewhere.
