There are normally enough people at the local college who would be more than happy to pretend to be able to play a guitar.

Except, Guitar Rig isn't a guitar synth like slayer. It's a guitar effects processor for real guitars.

With some tweaking with the sound the nn19 heavy guitar patch on reason sounds nearly real, best one i've heard yet, but i've not had a play with the slayer 2 yet, which rumour has it some popular artistes in another genre used. Is it a standalone vst or do you need to get FL to have it.

fucking gold.
haha, you couldn't have been more blunt about it.
He's right though. There really are no synths used in traditional heavy metal, and synthesized guitars are hard to get to sound right, especially if you're trying to make traditional sounding heavy metal.

Pretty much, guitars and the effects boxes/plugins are the only thing that can sound like a guitar.
A guitar is the ultimate guitar synthesiser, whilst it probably can be synthesised to a high standard, it'd just be easier and faster to learn guitar unless you're REALLY REALLY good at messing around with synth/samplers.
What you want is to get one of your guitarist mates to record every note on guitar, clean leaves you more room to play but the fx might well give you what you want. have fun!

That looks good, but does it rely on guitar signals, or can you use it in a DAW as vst?

you can use it for whatever signal you wanna have effects on. recorded/Live audio or midi. it works great for real guitar but with midi it works just as well. and it's not a vst it's a dxi synth. and quite possibly the most bad-ass one i've ever seen.

Slayer is ok, theres a demo available at http://www.refx.net .
Unfortunately tho, the best is a guitar. Even guitar rig's FX processing isn't all that special when it comes to creating some good metal sounds (like Metallica).

But then again, the power of the words.
This could be because Metallica is one of the bands that are associated with metal to the general population. Making it easier for any non-metal fan to understand how the sound will be. Of course there is several bands that in your opinion is better.
There is better bands technically, theoretically and practically, but there is few that is better known than Metallica, making it a great point of refrence.

Napalm Death have a good guitar sound!
Actually, one of the best guitar sounds I've heared is on my Line 6 Flextone 3 amp! I've got 2 different distortion settings programmed in. One of them sounds exactly like old Deicide and the other sounds like pure Gore Metal!
Unfortunately I blew my amp at band practice the other day... Again.
I'd love to start using my amp to record instead of the guitar port.

I like the Metallica sound and evidently so do a lot of people. I have been playing guitar for 10+ years and have heard many different sounds, so I can like whatever the hell I want you idiot. Thanks to the poster about the metallica reference, exactly, it was an easy reference to make. I'm not as anal as you, needing to spend 5 hours thinking about a good reference to make in some post on Newgrounds. Go have your aneurism.
