Just curious is it possible to seperate the lyrics and the instrumental on a mp3?

To fully do so on a standard mp3 is incredibly unlikely, because you would have to cut the voices frequencies and likely ruin a few instruments doing so, and only get a piece of the voice. If you are looking for the voice only, look for the tracks 'acapella', and as for instruementals use just 'instrumentals'. Oh and your going to have to pay.

If you can get your hands on a multitrack that works too.

Buy. (Yes, I said buy) Adobe Audition, and you have both of those options readily available. They don't work 100% of the time, there's often artifacts left behind from hihats, snares... tinny noises, etc.
