Do you even make enough income to actually have to pay taxes? I don't, this combined with the federal grants I'm recieving, kinda put me a position where I should kind of just be grateful the wealthy are around. How about the rest of you?

Yes I pay taxes, and (get ready for this) I'm in the military. I PAY MY OWN WAGES! to a point anyway. income tax that every person who has a paycheck gets pays for the military.

Exactly. This is the United States - there's no call for deifying the wealthy and putting them above criticism, after the Estate Tax cut and two or three consecutive tax cuts, I question exactly how much of anything they pay for.

You have nothing buy my utmost respect for that.

Not neccessarily. In the case of people like me, where my income is below a certain benchmark, the only deductions I see on my paycheck go to FICA (socail security and medicare) now unless you go into technicalities about congress stealing from the the socail security fund that means that a whole lot of people do not pay one dime towards the military.

I didn't say they're above criticism I implied you're a God damn moron for not recognizing their contribution.
As far as them not paying anything let's not let a little thing like facts disrupt your ranting:
Basically most of us on this forum are sucking off the tit of the wealthy, especially those of us who are recieving Federal Finacial Aide. Even if your income is above the $8,500 required to actually pay any income tax I would still wager that you are taking out a hell of a lot more than you're putting in.
So these people aren't joining the millitary, it's a volunteer service, most of you laying down criticism in this topic aren't in the millitary either. The difference here is at least these people are footing the bill with their persuits of higher paying activities.

Someone's just jealous that he couldn't get into an Ivy. But seriously-the hidden Ivies are just as good, if not better (esp. for undergrad).
Anyway: The wealthy are underrepresented in the military because they have better (read: more financially sound) options. That's unfortunate as the wealthy, or at least the more educated, could provide a new leadership standard for the military

I raised this point earlier but I think it got lost in other peoples arguments. People with degrees even up to a PHD do join the military. If you have a batulars or higher. you are put through officer training. All ot our officer hold degrees now. You can not go from enlisted to officer anymore without at least a batulars degree. So the fact that we have officers is a testiment to the fact that the educated are signing up.

The educated apparently can't even spell "bachelor's degree."

That was taken totaly out of context, and has nothing to do with what I just said. Thanks. Now for why people feel the need to attack my spelling errors (which are not that common), and not actualy reply to my points. Is it because you can't?

this dude is right, the rich dont have to go to war, but the poor do.
i dont get how that works. you know what i say, fuck the rich, they dont desever to make like 2billion dollars a year. Celebrities get paid more than we do. THEY DONT DO A FUCKING THING FOR THE ECONOMY. all they do is sit there smiling at camaras and people pay good money just to waste their time siting there watching the big screen till there celeb comes on.celebrities are a$$holes and they dont give a damn for other people who do anything for them for a minimum salary or a autograph. the poor are the celebrities. they stand together to keep eachother alive and they do other stuff that others wouldnt do for a salary to live in a nice house or apartment.

We keep handing money to these same politicians in government because there is no feasable alternative. You've got dynasties rampant in Congress and the Executive branch - Bush, Clinton, Kennedy, Ford, Rockefeller, and these people have such control over things like appropriations that it is impossible to presume they would go ANYWHERE else. Why would these very wealthy, very disconnected politicians pass legislation that would make no college exempt from ROTC recruiters? It's a vote against class. Just because we keep giving them our money doesn't mean they're doing something right, just that they've become the only ones to give it to. That 99% retention rate in the Senate is a high wall for anyone to jump.

And besides, how is it smart to send your intellectual elite on the battlefield? You don't put the president and the generals on the front line.
Exactly, those are the kinda people who run the country. Of course wealth gets you out of that sort thing, only an intellectual can find a way to make billions of dollars. You dont wanna throw them out there and waste a good economical source?
When it comes down to the think blue line, the brave get the medals and the brains get the cash and expensive hookers. But still after this, the rich and cowardish are still idolized more.

It's funny. The elites SHOULD SERVE. "As recently as 1956, 400 members of Princeton's graduating class went on to serve in the military. In 2004, nine graduates did so. Harvard, Yale, Brown and other elite universities don't even allow Reserve Officer Training Courses on their campuses.
In the years after World War II, virtually every member of Congress was a veteran of military service. By 1971, three-quarters of the members had worn the uniform. Today, only a third of the 535 members of the Senate and the House of Representatives have served.
During World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had sons serving in uniform. Today's political leaders and the rest of the country's elite don't feel the same obligation to send their children to serve in harm's way."
