Post here how you learned Flash for the first time.
Was it a book? A class? A friend?

I learnt it from a book: Flash MX 2004 For Dummies

A few tutorials online, a friend of mine, a couple people on a couple a sites, and my Dad.
He helped me with actionscripts.

I figure tutorials are good. I could never pick up a book, they always start with "Well, i assume everybody with a brain knows what The radius of PI to the power of hydraphone equals Actionscript, so we'll start from there..." (Or something like that)
Or maybe im just stupid.

I got the basics from the tutorials that actually came with flash. The rest, in terms of animation, is pretty self-explanitory. My techniques and stuff I developed on my own. Actionscript is a whole nother story though, since I still don't really know anything about it except the basics.

Indeed.

Well I mostly worked on my knowledge of programs like this, because I've gone trough a LOT of them, Zbrush2, Corel Painter, Gimp, Open Canvas, Abdobe Photoshop and Imageready to name a few. So I figured most of the basics out myself.
And for the rest I've learned a lot from just lurking around here in the Flash forum.

Not all books say that. I like the "Dummies" series because they give you every single detail. They are quite good.

i tried teaching my self for a while , but i got impatient and just went to newgrounds to look for tutorials. And i found out 70% of the tutorials in newgrounds is shit. So i ended up teaching my self...i took about 7 months...and today the average score of my flashes is about 2.5/5....

in terms of animation, ive never cared for learning anything more than what i know

in terms of actionscript and general programming, i learnt on my own using flashes documentation to learn the use of the methods and classes, then everything else, theory and algorithmics ive taught myself through experimentation

I can't really remember how I got it, but me and a friend got it at the same time and made stuff. You can see the results in my portal submissions (Hero number one and the Soldier one (my friends)).

Then me and another friend got into it together to and he helped me a bit. I made some crappy stuff, but it was fun and alot of them are quite long (I have a 4 minut-ish sequel to Hero number one).

Theeennn.. I think I got into doing game sprites (not Gif sprites) because there easier to make on a smaller scale, and there just fun to whip out.

I didn't use tutorials or anything, because i'm not very good at following written instruction as my mind tends to drift.

Great book!

That is a great book, but thats not how i learned, I learned from a friend that doesn't post on NG, well he didn't really teach me, but he got me started, first i started with random animations that always got blammed, then i started using preloaders and play and replay buttons and very simple actionscripts, and now all i make is games after going through 3 books they are:
Macromedia Flash Advanced by Russell Chun (my first book =D)
some "Actionscript" book (my second but not very memorable book that didn't teach me anything so i don't concider myself owning it
Macromedia Flash MX 2004 for dummies (third, second most helpful book i own)
Foundation Actionscript for Flash 8 by Sham Bhangal (best book EVER)

and thats it :)

I learned alot from the AS:Main, the Cartoon Smart tutorials, Books, and Psychoninja teaches me stuff in his free time :)
I learned alot of the animation thru just doing it over and over again. Thats the best way for me to learn for me.
