Hitler took advantage of a lousy situation, gave a scapegoat, and rallied the people into hatred oif that scape-goat. Mao and Stalin also took advantage of bad situations, and once they came to power, quickly crushed all domestic opposition. Controlling the mob is nothing special.

In Hitler's case it was the oldest known tool of power in the book...fear. His early forces burnt down the Reichstag building in order to use national security to increase his governmental power. Using communists and especially jews as scapegoats for everything, he was able to focus the hatred of an entire nation and that is ultimately how he gained power.
There is a real good wikipedia article on Hitler if you are interested in that portion of history.

Terror + nationalism + effective control of the media.
Simple as that. Plus, they came into power when there wasn't much opposition, and if there was, there quickly WASN'T anymore.

i think they got into power because they were deviants. they saw a need in a society, and they took are of it. and in return for filling that need, people became followers.

Only in a country where things are going very badly. In a modern, well developed nation, where everyone is well off and reletivly intellegent, dictators can't take power. Politicans can abuse power, but no where near dictatorship levels.

'the depression' means an economic depression, not that germans were literally sad. and most people there didn't support his treatment of the jews, not even other nazis.

I remember hearing that Hitler got into power because Germany was in a bad situation, pretty much in a depression, and he channeled all sadness from people into anger and oppression against the Jews. Then from the Jews he went to Russians, women, and eventually everyone who wasn't German and had blue eyes and blonde hair.
Hitler is a perfect example on how an aryan should look like!

I feel as though it was less about the use of fear that kept hitler and mao into power. It was the fact that mao was able to shit the blame easily when he screwed up(which he did a lot) and keep himself popular with the people. As for hitler I think it was because the people were willing to overlook the persecution of jews because he was able to forward the country economically and break the country out of the restraints imposed upon it by the paris peace conference

Stalin was able to rise to power because the Russion society was no longer adapted to her age. During the 19th century, a large part of Europe knew many revolutions, resulting in the creation of new governemtn types. Liberalism, nationalism, imperialism,.... these are all terms originating from 19th century Europe. Russia however was still stuck with an absolutistic Tsar. When WW I broke out, Russia was part of the triple entente, along with England and France. In 1917 however, a revolt finally began due to the harsh conditions (a large part of the provisions was being used by the military) and the feling that it wasn't a war of the people, but a war of the Tsar that was being fought. These revolts led to a revolution, allowing Stalin to return to Russia, with the help of the Germans. Stalin had fled to Switzerland a few yers before, but when the revolutionaries explained their situation and proposed a peace treaty, the Germans allowed him to return to Russia. In the beginning, communism was Marx' dream come true. Marx had forgotten about a few human flaws however: greed and ambition. And so, a land of repression was born.

that was lenin who came with the help of the germans. I think stalin was either in his homeland georgia or in siberia as a punsiment for disloylty to the tsar. He then later became the secerety of lenins party and was not the next choice for ruler of russia after lenin died, he simply grabed power because the other members of the party were too stupid to see what was coming, expect for lenin who warned the others before he died but they thought he was delusional so ignored him.
