Just listened to these for the first time in at least a year today. Just Octavarium, only one of their albums I ever really got into.

Going to check out some of their other stuff now.

Great. :D

I first got Systematic Chaos when it first came out to see what all the hype about DT was. I liked it but it wasn't THAT great.

Then I tried looking up more songs online and found all the songs on Octavarium and absolutely loved it so I got that album.

Then I saw Dream Theater in August '07. But I actually met a totally drunk hot single chick before they started playing, and being the player I am I was making out with her in the back of the crowd while DT was playing. From what I could hear they were pretty good but I wasn't really paying attention to the music much. :P Although I wish I was now, oh well.

I tried to look up more DT albums that were good but I could never find anything I really liked so I just sort of passed them on.

Then earlier this year I asked the hell(I think it was Nev actually) and they recommended me Images and words as well as Awake. So I got those albums.

Loved them, then after a very large all day DT online search I listened to A change of seasons the song and it was so fucking amazing I got that album without even listening to anything else on the album.

That last part was about three weeks ago.

AND NAOW I'M JOINNING THE DT CLUB.

/end story.

I said I liked Dream Theater, but I just thought they were highly overrated because at the time I only had Octavarium and Systematic Chaos so I hated them in way like I hate all overrated things .

But now that I have those other three albums I realize why they are so famous.

Train of Thought... essential :P?
I'd say Metropolis Pt. 2 is definately essential. I'd rather get Six Degrees over ToT though :).

1) Train of Though
2) Images and Words
3) Systematic Chaos
4)Scenes from a memory
5)A Change of Seasons
6)Octavarium
7)Awake
8) Six degrees of inner turbulence
8) Falling into infinity

Or WDaDU :P.

I'll jump on this bandwagon too:

1. Awake
2. A Change of Seasons
3. Images and Words
4. Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
5. Octavarium
6. Falling Into Infinity
7. Systematic Chaos
8. When Dream and Day Unite
9. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
10. Train of Though

I wouldn't say they are so famous. There are alot more famous groups in comparison. When i first started listening to DT which was about 6 years ago, no one i know knew them.

Pfff, 6Doit was nothing compared to ToT.

Meh, i'm not even gonna include that it's too old. Besides there was no James back then :(

I always knew you was an awake fag, but there's no reason ToT should be at the bottom >:( It has Stream of Consciousness - the best DT song ever!

And i only put ACOS so low because it was all cover songs aside from ACoS the song.

Like France or something.

Pfff, 6Doit was nothing compared to ToT.

I don't really rate either to be honest. Both have an outstanding track, then a lot of meh.

It had the rest of the guys :). All of whom are far more essential than James.

Except Kevin Moore obviously :P.

But thats all it has (well and In the Name of God I suppose), and as good as it is, I think Erotomania and Dance of Eternity are better instrumentals. SoC is fantastic though, no denying that.

Thats why I didn't put it first. If it didn't have the covers it'd be number 1 for me. But as a whole I can't but either Awake or Images below it.

You know it's weird, I honestly had no idea those songs were all covers until a few days ago. No lie.

What are some bands similar to Dream Theater? And don't say Symphony X, just cause there both prog metal doesn't mean there similar.

Actually apparently Sonata Arctica's upcoming '09 album is highly Dream Theater influenced, that should be interesting to hear.

ToT has more than one great track. I think nearly all the songs on the album are amazing. The worst of the lot being As i am.
The Glass Prison is awesome too though.

It had the rest of the guys :). All of whom are far more essential than James.

Yeah, but it just don't sound the same. I dunno, i tend to avoid it when listening to DT :/

Nevah! SoC>Dance of Eternity>Erotomania

Agreed on this. Although the covers were pretty awesome it's not their usual awesome stuff.

It tells you in the booklet that comes with the CD. Some of the songs are their own little mixes of various songs joined and mixed into one. You should have noticed the Queen bit in the BIG MEDLEY at 4:45-6:00.

Also, i think i posted this a long time ago, but here's Elton Johns version of Love lies bleeding/Funeral for a friend (Track2 on ACoS) and DT's version.

Elton Johns.
DT's.

Wow, I've still managed to wait until the new album is out. I'm dying to hear their covers and funny enough, I'm actually looking forward to hearing their covers just as much as their new stuff. After all, when they're going to cover a Queen medley, Stargazer and a King Crimson track, there's no reason why I shouldn't be excited to hear their covers in the new album.

I just find it really mih, no idea why.

Well I mean unless I was aiming to collect a band's entire discography I don't like owning lots of albums by a band, I mean lots of albums by bands that have like 15+ albums.

I mean, for all I could know in a year I might lose interest in DT completely, even though I doubt it.

Plus I don't want to become a diehard fan cause once I get obsessed with something i'm obsessed with it for a LONG time. :(

Why would you even wear that? I'm pissed off that I got mine signed by James, means I can't wear it :(.

To show off? I mean, i'd wear that to a concert if I wasn't afraid of someone ripping it off my back.

The question is, why would you wear that to a place like Six Flags?

It's definitely not their best work, but it's not bad either. I think my favourite songs of the album so far are The Shattered Fortress and The Count of Tuscany. TSF has alot of awesome riffs and tid-bits from their great stuff (even a few from ToT :D)

Really? I don't like Rite that much but so far i'm loving everything else i'm hearing.

When i first heard Rite, i also thought it was quite meh, but after listening to it a bit more on the album, it's sort of grown on me.....it's not half bad.

Like Nev said, if i had a signed shirt i wouldn't wear it. You might spill something on yourself. Also, you might get all sweaty then you'd have to wash it, and it might fuck up the signatures D:

I got Black Clouds & Silver Linings on Monday. I would have posted my thoughts then, but I thought the album needed a chance before giving a final verdict. I'm on my 8th listen through the whole album (i.e. 3CD special) and what are my thoughts on it?

The main disc: It's another good album from Dream Theater, but there are some flaws. Firstly, as great as The Shattered Fortress is, couldn't they have added more new material and less recycling from their previous AA tracks? I don't mind them reusing material from them, but the problem is it covered around 75% of the whole track.

Another thing I wasn't too fond of was the placing of the mellow part in The Count of Tuscany. To me, it seemed more of something you'd play at the start of the track rather than in the middle of it. Maybe I'll eventually adapt to this? Despite that, it's still a good song.

As for my last complaint, maybe it's just me but I felt three of the tracks in this album sounded like album closing tracks. The endings to A Nightmare to Remember, The Shattered Fortress and of course, the actual album closer The Count of Tuscany all seemed like album closing tracks. o_O

Second disc: All good covers, even the two tracks I wasn't familiar with. The choices of covered tracks were pretty original, most especially how out of all the Queen songs they chose an overlooked medley from Sheer Heart Attack.

Third disc: The album without James LaBrie, but this bonus disc was an interesting "What if the whole album was instrumental?" thought. I thought the best track as an instrumental was The Shattered Fortress.

Just a correction on that: I didn't mean to say A Nightmare to Remember, I was meant to say The Best of Times, but come to think about it, it's not much of an album closer feel as the other two, so that just leaves The Shattered Fortress and The Count of Tuscany.

You've yet to get the album on CD or something? I do recommend getting the special edition for the album itself and the two bonus discs, even though you've listened to some of the covers already. The instrumentals are still interesting to hear.

I think A nightmare to Remeber and Best Of times feel more like closer tracks in terms of the ending 30 or so seconds than The shattered Fortress and The count of Tuscany.

Also is it just me or does it feel wrong that The shattered Fortress ends when it does? If felt to me when the bass pedals at the end are smashing from the root of all evil that they would smash for a few seconds and then the song would burst back up and continue for another 7 minutes.

I don't, it just felt like the song could've been a lot longer.

Also my favorite songs on Black clouds are: A nightmare to remember, The count of tuscany, The shattered Fortress and the first two tracks on Disk two.

Bump!

New order of most favorite to least favorite DT albums I own:

1.) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2.) Images and Words
3.) Awake
4.) Octavarium
5.) A Change Of Seasons
6.) Train Of Thought
7.) Black Clouds & Sliver Linings
8.) Systematic Chaos

Also, I have a question. What happened to Kevin Moore? I know hes not in the band anymore but why did he leave/get kicked out? And where is he now?

He didn't care for the direction the band were going in, being overly technical and stuff and so he left after Awake.
It's a huge shame as I think he was the best song writer they've ever had. As evidenced by Awake and the quality of songs on that album. Just listen to Space-Dye Vest and try not to cum all over your pants and hands.

As for what he's doing now he's been in other bands ever since. I really should check them out myself as I've heard good things.

Six degrees and The Glass Prison are just AMAZING.

Although maybe it's because I just got this album the other day and i've only listened it through 4 times.

One of their best songs.
