NAME THAT TUNE:
How can you ever sleep a wink at night
Pretending that everything is alright
And have the balls to blame this shit on me
Never in my life have I seen someone
So fucking blind to the damage he has done
You're the rotted root in the family tree
Another great DT track!

I disagree.
Swearing is not becoming of Dream Theater.
Whenever I hear a swear word in a DT song (or any song in fact) I just think it shows a lack of vocabulary.

They only swear in that one verse, to add strength to it. In the first 2 verses it was the same more or less, but slightly calmer words. It got more powerful and harsh towards the end of that track.
Also, DT barely ever swear in their songs. Come to think of it, it´s the only one i can think of right now.
I don´t think it shows a lack of vocabulary. I think it shows aggression more that anything else. Other words might not give the same impact. e.g
Never in my life have i seen someone,
so damn blind to the damage he has done.
So you remember what song it is?

There are other ways to show angst. Look at Slayer.... they barely swear.
Most good bands don't. You don't need to swear, so why bother?
And James isn't remotely threatening... so it sounds pathetic when he says it.
So you remember what song it is?
I didn't.... but I put that it had swearing in it... and that it was about families. So I concluded it was Honor Thy Father.
Since ToT is kinda Nu-Metally (swearing) and father... family.... tied together like.

At least it's not too often the swearing. It's only on some songs on Train of Thought, some parts on 6DOIT, Prophets of War, Burning My Soul and I think that's it. The low amount of swearing from DT in songs is fine. However, if there was any swearing in Blind Guardian songs, I think that would be terrible since swearing and BG sound like a bad mix/

And Prophets of War is a great song. I recently picked up SC. Quite good, I didn't mind it. With only hearing Awake and Systematic Chaos it's quite easy to see that the band were alot better with Kevin Moore though.

Its not so much a case that they were better with Kevin... its just Awake is an amazing album.
Coinsedentally Images and Words is too :P.
I think their inspiration may be burning out. They're a Progressive band, and having to make unique albums is obviously a feat after 20 years.
Saying that, Systematic Chaos is definately a return to their better days. The lyrics are more fantasy based and the guitar work is infinitely more technical than it was on Octavarium.
I'd say its their fifth best album at the least (not including ACoS). Maybe fourth... I'm just a bit unsure as to whether I prefer it to Six Degrees and When Dream and Day Unite or not.

Probably. Kevin's work on Awake is better than this guys work on Systematic Chaos anyway.

If thats your way of disagreeing with me then I'll explain that Jordan is one of, if not the, greatest keyboard player of modern times.
Kevin wrote amazing songs, and I prefer his work with DT than Jordan's... but in terms of ability. Jordan shits on Kevin.

What did you guys think of the unofficial Master of puppets cover?
I thought it was pretty good. But because it was recorded live you can hear a few mistakes here and there, but nothing too bad. And the only other thing is that James doesn´t have a Metallica voice.

Oh, that's good enough.
It's sortof like the same with Cliff.
I'll defend my right to say that Cliff Burton is the greatest bass player of all time, and know full well that there are a few better bassists in terms of abillity. Cliff was just innovative and wrote so many awesome bass lines.

Exactly.
John Myung and Colin Marston own the fuck out of Cliff in terms of ability.
But Cliff wrote Orion, they didn't.

Ok guys, so i just got Systematic Chaos. I really like the front cover. I havn´t listened to it all yet, i´m still listening as we speak. From what i´ve heard i´m not all that impressed o_o
I´ve only listened to the first 2 songs - in the presence of enemies part 1 and 2, and i´m half way through Forsaken. It hasn´t really hooked me like some of their other albulms did the first time i listened. Maybe the latter songs will be better, or maybe listening through it a few more times (and louder - my girlfriend is asleep) will change how i feel about it.
What songs do you guys think are the best on the albulm?

They're not the first two songs.... they're the first and last songs.
And the best songs on the album for me are: In the Presence of the Enemies (especially part 2), Minstry of Lost Souls and Repentence.
I listened to the album on repeat this morning and while it didn't strike me too good on the first few listens, this morning I had somewhat of a revelation and I now view it as one of their finest.... I'm actually struggling in my mind to decide whether its better than Images..... It'd be better than Awake overall... but Awake has Space-Dye Vest, Scarred and a Mind Besides Itself... which more than makes up for the lesser songs on the album.
I think SC is an amazing album though. Each song is brilliantly catchy and what I like in Dream Theater.... all the songs remind me of Images and Words... a great mixture of catchy/popishness and technical prowess.

I´m sure what happened with you will happen to me, once i listen to it 2 or 3 times all the way through, i´ll be hooked. But surely it can´t be better than I&W!?

I'm starting to think it could be.
It reminds me so much of Images... yet Images has songs like Another Day and Under a Glass Moon which I'm not too fond of.
Where as everything on SC is really catchy and fast... and loud.
Maybe I'm just sick of Images, easily listened to it over a hundred times I reckon :P.

I´ve only had Images for about a month and i´ve probably listened to it about 30 times! I just heard Repentance - the start is from that song on SoC, i can´t remember name now.
This is when you come in with the name.
Anyway, i´m of to bed for today. Catch you all tomorrow.

I feel the exact same way about it. Honestly, the first time through the entire album, I wasn't really impressed. After several more times, I had fallen completely in love. I don't really understand why, but that's how it seems to happen for most people. Even songs that I initially DISLIKED.
Dark Eternal Night, for instance... I felt as though it was DT trying to be something they weren't. Yet now, I listen to it all the time (likely because the chorus is just so damn catchy). Maybe it's part of me loving something new, and fresh, but I definitely hold SC among the top few albums DT has put out.. ever. No doubt about it, I wouldn't consider it a failure from a creative standpoint at ALL.

SoC = Stream of Consciousness.
The intro is a reference to This Dying Soul. Same album as SoC.... but the album is Train of Thought, silly :P.
They're all part of Portnoy's 12 Steps Suite... all about his alcoholism.
I think its like:
I, II, III - Glass Prison
IV, V - This Dying Soul
VI, VII - THe Root of All Evil
VIII, IX - Repetence.
Though I'm sure I'm wrong somewhere.... but those are songs in the order they're in it.

On "Repentance" during the spoken parts, Mikael Åkerfeldt says:
"One of my best friends who's the godfather of my daughter, he asked me to sing or play something at his wedding, and I turned it down because I was busy and too much of a chickenshit to do it...And I feel sorry for that, because it was a very very close friend of mine"
I guess since it wasn't James saying it, it doesn't really count.

Eh, IMO, Jordan is better than Kevin.
Systematic Chaos didn't really do it for me... The albums was great but not like their previous albums.
IMO, Jordan's better work was on Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory.
