Yeah, it's free, but like a lot of those sites you can 'upgrade' to a better package that you have to pay for. More bandwidth, no ads, etc.
Free sites always smack loads of banners and pop-ups all over your pages.

You'll quickly learn in life, hardly anything is actually "free." Obviously, there are incurred costs for having a website. However, users can get a free account and use there basic services for free. And only thing you have to promise to do is to have something on the front page inviting others to join free webs with a link.
