hey. i'm in a bit of a predicament. i want to get a mic but don't know which one as im afraid of buying one with shite quality. so if you guys could tell me what mics you have and give a link to a clip of you using it (in a flash or otherwise) so that i can hear first hand (or ear) what the quality's like so that i can make a purchase in confidence.

- thanks.

If its voice you're recording, then its an SM-58 you'll be wanting. Best vocal mic out there, and not too expensive either.

I just bought a Rode NT1-A
and, I must say, it's very good.

BBS Signature

58 is good, but not so good for micing up amps because it's omni direction and picks up alot of room noise.

the 57 is good for vocals, micing amps/drums etc. And I think it looks cooler. + it's a little bit cheaper. We just recorded a band and used a 57 for vocals, and it sounded sick.

SM-58's are just shy of bulletproof.

How do you actually record with those mics? Do you have to buy a port for them or do they have usb cables or what?

through a series of adaptors, you'll get something useful.
XLR-1/4" >> 1/4"-mini >> Mini-soundcard.
ok, it's only two adaptors, but they're pretty readily available at your local radio shack (adaptor store). Most microphones will come with an XLR-1/4" adaptor.

Totally.

We were rigging up for a concert a few months ago, I was up a 20 foot scaffolding tower hanging an sm58 from the celing. Of course, the assistant sound tech forgot to strap it to the XLR cable with 'lec tape so it fell 15 feet to its apparent doom.

I went down, brushed it off and it worked fine.
