I am wonder what others think on this subject.
Are Parodies about video games more popular than original flash animations on Newgrounds?
I was asked this by a kid who had an original idea to submit, but then wondered if he should just forget it and do a nintendo parody.

Do something original. Parodies are often at the lower end of quality, but are usually 5'd because they have someone's favorite character in them.

But you or that guy your talking about could probably make original characters and have characters like Mario in the movie too.

Parodies rock. Not just game parodies. Didn't Monty Python make a parody of both King Arthur and Jesus? They got real popular because of those movies.

Depends. Some people can make parodies really funny but some people make them suck so badly.

parodies are always going to be popular, because the major parameters of the content are already laid out, which takes ALOT of work out of the process. Less work appeals to alot of the more non-creative artists, and helps newer artists spend more time on flash and less on story.

In a way I would have to say that yes, using recognizable characters is a quick and easy way to get more views and a slightly higher score for your flash, but it can only go so far. As the quality of an original animation goes up the probability that it will succeed based on its own merits also increases. Check the top fifty, the majority of them are completely original games and animations, the few parodies and tributes that are up there are also almost entirely hand drawn and non sprite. Originality does count for something on this site.

lol, k nub.
Look through the reviews of some Mario parodies and apologize to me when you find the mountains of reviews like this: "Well i didn't really like this movie, I mean it was pretty poorly done with too much tweening, but Mario rocks so I gave you a 5"

Only funny parodies like Dragonball Z In a Nutshell. But things that is just Mario saving the princess in a diffrent way than usual is boring.
