Why? Cuz I dunno,Wall isn't musically so beatyful as TDSotM,but the idea,the story,is somethin' so...sick! Roger Water's imagination is very...weird.

Dark side, no competition to me.

Which Tool album do you think is the best out of all 4?

I'd have to say 10,000 days. It's been 5 years in the making and it was worth the wait. The whole album flows as one unlike Ænema. It doesn't have its boring parts unlike Lateralus. Also the songs are overall a better standard than on Undertow. All of this of course is opinionated, but you can't really give factual evidence why one "collection of sounds" is better than another. It's just fun to discuss. So...

...Discuss.

...Discuss.

I'm basing all this purely on what I've heard from each, since I've not heard a full album. But about 3/4 off each one.

My least favourite is Undertow, Sober's a decent song. But Intolerance I don't like much at all. It seems less prog and more pub standard.

Then Lateralus, I just don't like what I've heard. They've probably just not grown on me yet.

And you forgot Opiate :P, so I'll throw that in there are third best. Opiate's a cool song (all I've heard) but it goes annoying at the end. Though its rather mellow and I like that.

10,000 is next. Its great, but I find its just too well produced. It just sounds so perfect and I don't like that. I can't explain it, its just tastes I suppose.

Aenina is easily my favourite. Every song I've heard from it is just fanastic. All my favourite Tool songs come from that album

I'll the songs from each album that I own - so you can see what my ratings reflect.

Undertow - Sober, Intolerance.
Opiate - Opiate.
Lateralus - Schism, Ticks and Leeches, The Grudge.
10,000 Days - Vicarious, Wings For Marie, 10,000 Days.
Anima - 46 & 2, Aenema, Eulogy.

I didn't :P It's an EP not an album :)

Undertow - Sober, Intolerance.

Prison Sex, Intolerance and Bottom are awesome.

Lateralus - Schism, Ticks and Leeches, The Grudge.

GET PARABOLA NOW! BEST TOOL SONG EVER.

10,000 Days - Vicarious, Wings For Marie, 10,000 Days.

Right in Two is the best song on this album, the lyrics are immense.

Anima - 46 & 2, Aenema, Eulogy.

That's just about all the album has to offer with the inclusion of it's other 2 singles (and best songs), Stinkfist (best metaphorical useage of lyrics ever, at a glance it's about anal fisting :O), Ænima (another great song, too tired to go into detail)

My opinion is, you haven't properly experienced a Tool album until you've played it through from start to finish at least 5 times. It's only then I began to form an opinion with each of the songs and whatnot because they're so in depth that you miss things the first few times.

Still, EP or no, its still an offering of Tool that should be acknowledged.

Kay oh. I'll get Prison Sex too, you seem to like that :).

Right in Two is the best song on this album, the lyrics are immense.

And dat. When I'm back at college in September I'll get my friend to lend me the albums. He's a massive Tool fan.

Still, those songs are amazing.

Ænima (another great song, too tired to go into detail)

I said I've heard that one. I just spelt it 'Anima' by mistake.

Obviously I have experienced an entire album, but I can relate to what you're saying in that at first I hated Eulogy and Sober. Neither struck me as good. Then after a few deep listens I realised how good they were.
Especially Eulogy, that song is brilliant.

Long time no post... since my comp's all screwed up! >.<

Still, I've been listening to Opeth and Dream Theater(even at the moment, Octavarium is playing) and I even bought the Damnation-album from Opeth some time ago. Now I'm in Göteborg in hunt for some of their other stuff, as well as some Dream Theater.

I just can't get enough of Octavarium, the song. Are there any other people here who can say they've listened it six times in a row?! I guess the reason I can bear it constantly is because I sing it along every second time I hear it. :D However, that's not the case with Opeth... If I just could learn to perform the vocals of Ghost of Perdition without hurting my voice... :'( Oh well, a man can dream... theater...

Oh, and by the way, if someone has the chance of seeing either of the bands live, then go for it! They're great!!! (but I'm sure most of us knew that already... :P )

I can do it :P. Still Ghost of Perdition is Opeth at their least best. Blackwater Park, Still Life and Morningrise you should check out :D.

I really wanna see Dream Theater live. And as soon as they annouce a UK tour I'm getting tickets.
And I'm seeing Opeth in November :D... again. I saw them at Download and they were brilliant. Akerfeldts voice live blew me away. It was like an angel singing.... death metal :P.

I acknowledge it, it's just i was referring to full length releases.

Heh it's great, takes a couple of listens tho.

He has taste!

Pushit is awesome.

Obviously I have experienced an entire album,

Yea, I didn't mean specifically you ^_^

but I can relate to what you're saying in that at first I hated Eulogy and Sober. Neither struck me as good. Then after a few deep listens I realised how good they were.

I was the same with Schism and Roseta Stoned.

Especially Eulogy, that song is brilliant.

It is, but I find Stinkfist to be deeper. No idea why, I think I love the fact that the lyrics are metaphorical (just like Prison Sex ^_^).

Yep, that's their experimental album, the sister record to All-Deathy-Deliverance.

I didn't enjoy Blackwater Park nearly as much as Ghost of Perdition... I might be the story or just the melody... Still, I really liked BP though... it's about on the same level as Black Rose Immortal on my scale.

I never had the chance of seeing Opeth although they had several shows in Finland... :'(
My sadistic friend sent me an SMS from the show, though... *I'm gonna get him someday*
As for Dream Theater, never have and probably never will unless there's a miracle. Still, I know exactly how good they both are from the videos I've seen.

Anyone know band called ZooK? It's band of Kingston Wall's ex-bassist and drummer(Jukka Jylli and Sami Kuoppamäki)I were watchin' it last weekend. It doesn't play prog, like KW,but it still rocked! I even talked with mr.Jylli, cuz I'm bassist too.^^

gave "Red" by King Crimson a good listening to last night, really is an astonishing album and really ahead of its time. If you played the title track to someone they'd probably guess its some recent industrial style metal.

I've got the first and last :). When I start getting my EMA when I return to college in September I'll start buying CDs again. And Blackwater Park and Still Life are near the top of my list. Along with Alive (Dream Theater).

What do you think of MAYH? For me it was a massive endurance to listen to. Now I've started to appreciate it a lot more.

I've listened to it straight through once now and yes, it's really an endurance sport but I know from former experience that albums CAN get great on latter tries. :) Ther MUST be some thruth in people titteling this specific record the best work of Opeth ever... so we'll see how it ends up... :P

I got a good topic to keep this place alive for a bit (hopefully).
What prog bands have you seen live?

In order of seeing them:

Muse - First band I ever saw, at V2004 :D.
As it was my first gig and I was young I was a little scared. Plus I had no idea of any Muse songs cept Time Is Running Out. I only got the ticket (free) cause my friend was going and his friend pulled out at the last minute so he invited me.

Coheed and Cambria - All the following were at Download.

Wasn't a very long set and they didn't have their drummer due to airport troubles. So they weren't as good as they could of been. Claudio didn't react with the audience at all, but music wise they were decent - cept the drums.

Tool

They headlined the Friday at Download and that meant I had a lovely wait - like an hour - for them to come on. This was made hellish due to my exposed burnt arms and this person squashed against me with his irriating rucksack on. The wait was miserable, and I've not heard many Tool songs at this time. So like Muse I didn't enjoy them as much as I should of. But songs like Aenema, Sober and 46 & 2 I loved (the only songs - except Eulogy, which they didn't play - that I'd heard by them before the show).

SikTh

They were really good, but again I hadn't heard a lot of songs and they didn't play any I knew. But I was close to the stage. The set was short too - 25 minutes, it was early in the day on Saturday.

Opeth

I was right at the front as I love this band. They didn't play one song that I knew, but that didn't matter as they were just amazing. If it wasn't for Metallica and Guns N' Roses they would have stole Download for me. Mike's voice was just sublime. One of the greatest sounds I've ever heard. You wouldn't believe how beautiful his voice is based on the records.
Oh, and Opeth are amazing. So it was fun :). A short set though sadly. And a couple of Demon of the Falls wouldn't have hurt. Still one of the best bands I've seen live. And I get to see them again on the 10th November :D.

I am joining on a recommendation. A plug for an unusually prog cd in a non-prog band: Nine Inch Nail's The Fragile. Its an amazing cd, like a industrial-rock-pop The Wall of the nineties. Yes, I think its that good.

I am a big floyd fan, Opeth and Tool too (Seeing Opeth at Gigantour, MUHAHAHHA), so I think I'd fit in nicely.

Yes,I hope this place would be a bit active...

What prog bands have you seen live?

Unfortunately nothin'... :( I'm damn new in prog-culture,so only one amateur-band,which played more like Kingston Wall -style,if I remember right, the name was Velvet Desperado and in the middle of gig the singer/guitarist called to moon! :D

But I liked the band and I even didn't see band's wholse set. :( Bad luck. Always bad luck to me...

Thankee.

To comment on the earlier too Convo. Thier best Prog album, IMO is actually Lateralus. If you look at what makes a progressive album a progressive album, that is the most cohesive from front to back, almost cyclical (look at Dark Side, the ultimate cyclical album). HOWEVER, I don't think its their strongest. Aenima has some of the best individual songs, but doesn't stack up well as a complete whole. 10,000 Days has some amazing two-parts (Wings for Marie, Rosetta Stoned, Right in Two) but again, as a collective whole it pales. I dont know Opiate or Undertow well enough to comment. My personal rankings - Aenima, 10,000 Days, Lateralus, Undertow, Opiate (I don't know it, so its last by default).

Also, check out The Mars Volta, they're coming out with new stuff soon, and they're very Piper At The Gates of Dawn Floyd era influenced punkish, progish good band.

They're one of my favourite bands ever, and easily favourit progressive band. Although I dunno about the punk description. At The Drive-In were pretty punk and I suppose TMV has moments - like Inertiatic ESP.

But yeh I agree they're amazing... check them out if you haven't already.

Whats sad is that:
A-Jon Theodore left the group.
B-The release has been pushed back almost a month due to it.

On their Myspace a new song is up too from Amputechture - Viscera Eyes:
The Mars Volta - Myspace

John Frusciante (of RHCP) is a guest on every track too. So that should be cool as he did two great solo's on L'via.

I went to art school last month, and at one of the performances of the musical kids they did a live version of Viscera Eyes that was spot on! These were kids my age (17) and they did a perfect rendition, it was almost like seeing the band....Not quite, lol, but it was awesome. Its a great song too... I cant wait for the album.

IDK about the punk description either. Blame Wikipedia.

thats a really great album, not many people would class king crimson as a founder of modern heavy metal style, instantly thinking of black sabbath or someone similar, but red is a reeealy heavy album at times. i heard somewhere that one of kurt cobaines favourite albums was red but i dunno if its true.
