Geologists Confirm Homer's "lliad"
By Rossella Lorenzi, Discovery News

Feb 6 — Homer's "Iliad" is not a tale, but a geographically accurate account that's now supported by sediment records, new research confirmed.

The ancient Greek writer's description of the Trojan War's landscape matches a geologic reconstruction of the way the region looked about three millennia ago, said geologist John Kraft of the University of Delaware.

Quote of the day: @Nysssa "What is the word I want to use here?" @freakapotimus "Taint".

The Illiad may not be a tale, but it is a beautiful story.
Homeros (that's how we Dutch people call him) was not intending to create "a geologic reconstruction of the way the region looked", but he just wanted to write a story about the Trojan War (which he unfortunatly couldn't finish).

When Schlieman discovered the trojan ruins he discovered them following the geographical locations the iliad gave. So homer known what he was writing about

And he finished it when Hector died because this was the ancient way of writing theatre, when the story arrives to a climax, it ends abruptly so the emotion is not lost. Of course, the trojan war wasn't caused by Helena. Historicians belive that the Greek declared war because Troy was demanding a lot of taxes for the commerce with the Black sea's wheat-rich plains.

The Trojan War really did occur, but there is still a lot of work to do separating myth from fact.

Personally, I want to know whether they really did build that big wooden horse. :)

Did you know that when Schlieman thought that he found the 'Trojan ruins', he found ruins which were older than the city of Troy in Homer's story.
He destroyed a lot of historical information searching for Troy and he stole a lot of gold.

Didn't he find a ruins which were modern? That's what i've always heard

and he stole a lot of gold

I thought that he stole jewellery (there's a photo of her wife with them) but not gold, because he was rich

Jewelry then. You're right.
But I really thought he found older ruins and he dug right threw the real Troy.

Troy was 7 cities built on top of one another. Nobody's sure which one was the Troy from the Iliad days, but they doubt it was the first one.
