This is generally regaurded as the romantic comedy swordfight classic of all time. But those following the love story seem to miss a fatal flaw. Wesley is able to save Buttercup because of the skills he's aquired as a pirate, doing very bad things to presumably innocent people. Is this really the proper guy for a heroic romantic lead? I love the movie and all but that simple fact is impossible to ignore once you realize it.
In his own words "I kill a lot of people."
I have nothing against people who can use pot and lead a productive life. It's these sanctimonius hippies that make me wish I was a riot cop in the 60's

Well, he was captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts and Roberts threatened to kill him every night. He then became the Dread Pirate Roberts when the other one decided to quit. He was forced to become a pirate by being threatened and later decided it was cool. I don't believe he stayed too long on the ship when he searched for his beloved Buttercup.

Indeed, but it's a classic for good reason. I was merely pointing out an aspect that seems to have been ignored. You think he got rich enough to retire in 5 years doing honest work? Oh no, he sent meny to davy jones' locker, many of whom were merely protecting their hard earned possessions or doing the jobs they kept themselves, and their children, fed with.

It's Tim Burton, not David Lynch. (though David Lynch himself is obscure with his meanings)
But the point is, the plot is not the focus, the presentation i.e. music and animation. If it mattered who the characters were, Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins would lead.

I understand where you're coming from, but you're saying a good guy can't become a bad guy when he thinks he has lost his love.... then turn good again? lol
So he did a couple bad things.. and kills some people. At least he was a good actor! : )

That funny nipple-sucker torture machine in the movie gave me ideas. You know, the one in the secret dungeon that can only be accessed by the fake tree?

The moniker of "Dread Pirate Roberts" instilled so much fear that those attacked would surrender before they could be captured and presumably killed. So while he didn't go around killing prisoners, he had to make everyone think that he did.

Uggh, Did you even watch the movie?! Everyone knows that Wesley was actually the son of a pirate, he wasn't a pirate himself. He was actually an aspiring rabbi until Gargamel stole his cadny and gave it to the Princess.

Pirates are divine and heavenly beings and would never do something to hard an innocent person.
Unless they're Catholic.

What I want to know is, did he learn how to swing around a pole and flip in the air landing ready to fight while he was a pirate too?
I fucking love that movie/

You think the reputation would have stayed if as much as one spared victim opened his yap about it? He did not gain those combat skills and will to die without getting his hands dirty.

Chicks dig that though.
If he was a good guy, and he ended up with the girl, all the girls in the audience would be like, "WTF? No wai! We ain't got no luvs for the likes of him!".
Freals. Girls are into very bad people.

My name is Indigo Montoya you killed my father, prepare to die.
Yeah I don't really see that as a flaw in the movie really, plus with an awesome name like The Dreaded Pirate Roberts, you can't question him.

I found four white horses, and then I remembered there were four of us, if we found the lady, hi lady
I could argue with wesley, the name he shares with a star trek man. Besides he had passed the pirate name on by the end of the film. Call it not a flaw if you want but he was a murderer

It wasn't who he was that made him the ideal heroic romantic lead though, it was his intentions. The whole "true love, beyond time and distance against all odds and death" thing, which redeemed him from whatever he might've done in the course of carrying that through.
Thats just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I think that if you're willing to kill for love, you're still a good guy.
love > murder
Just my opinion. Whether you disagree or agree matters not.

The other flaw - Why didn't Andre the Giant crush a horse when he sat on it at the end?
Also, how the fuck did he get out of the window when he killed the Prince ( I forgot the name )?
