Should I wait until Flash 9 or purchase the Flash 8 upgrade now?

I notice that now that Adobe's acquired Macromedia, they no longer have the less-than-3-versions-before-requirement for upgrade. But, I believe the upgrade price is still the same as it was 6 months ago...

(Please do not discuss warez or pirated software or cracks (etc) on this thread. I'm well aware that that's an option that some of this thread believe in. But, for whatever it's worth, I prefer to purchase software that I plan to use on a daily basis.)

Hm... If you have MX now... Than I believe you should Upgrade for the following reasons.

-Flash 8 was just released and Flash 9 will be a while to be devoluped. (2 years)
-Flash 8 has nice Blurring effects and others as well.
-It isn't so expensive.
-If your a student you get it cheaper... but the thing is you can't sell or make money off your work... so that means no entering contests.

Buy it. I recommend it =]

I remember I got my MX upgrade from 5 for just $99 from Amazon. The Flash 8 Professional upgrade is $299! I'm not sure if having blurring effects (which used to be free from extensions or just a bit of actionscripting) is worth that much.

I'm guessing that if I wait a few more months, the upgrade price will eventually go down...

How sure are you that it'd take two years for Flash 9 to come out? They've already released the code name (Blaze).

(Also, I believe the disadvantage of the student version is that you can't upgrade from that. You have to buy the full software ever single time; in the long run, it gets more expensive.)

I wouldnt bother if i was you.

It offers new better video stuff (streaming from a seperate video file, built in player) effects (filters and others) and also some actionscript changes.

But, to be honest it's been a little buggy and not just on my part. It's alot like MX 2004, and i would say its not worth the price. If you have photoshop/Fireworks etc, there is no need as all the effects can already be made, just takes a little longer.

I would recommend getting Flash 8 right now, because Macromedia has been overrun by Adobe, and I don't know if they'll be coming out with any more programs like that. Hopefully Adobe will respect that l33t software and come out with better stuff.

Good Luck

Looks like there is a few different reasons to get it and not get it...

2 Years probably since Flash 8 took 2 years ^_^

yeah... Adobe's attempt at getting out a Flash software via LiveMotion a couple of years back wasn't quite as I expected... I also fear that Flash 9 or even 10 wouldn't be worth the upgrade at all because Adobe doesn't really know how to improve their software (improvements after Photoshop 5.5 totally dwindled), nor make anything other than non-scripting art programs (but if that's the case, then Flash would die...)

do you guys think that the upgrade price will be going down soon?

you do realise that Adobe bought MACROMEDIA, not their software, so all of MACROMEDIAS developers and designers and directors are part of Adobe now, and besides, how can you say that when they pre-released Flex2.0 with ActionScript 3.0

My personal opinion is if you're just doing animation and so forth is to wait awhile for either the price to drop or another version to become available. MX is much more stable and the much hyped flash 8 filters are, honestly, not all that impressive.

On the other hand if you're interested in actionscript the upgrade from AS 1.0 to AS 2.0 might be to your favor.

The Flash 8 upgrade is only useful if you need the extra support for the Flash Comm Server for Video and the extra tidbits that enable you to attach Gifs. The filters can easily be done in another graphic program.

Not only that, but it's not fantastic yet as a profesional tool. Only 56% of the computer have flash 8 installed at the moment, and if you want to do flash web design you'd generally be sticking to flash 7 anyways for this reason (98% of people have flash 7).

But... i'd wait till flash 9, and then have the option to export as flash 8 (which by then 98% of people should have it), and also the option to up to flash 9 for anything you want to use new effects for.

Why do so many people make this mistake

AS2 was NOT introduced with flash 8, it was introduced in MX 2004

Flash 8 only add more classes (such as the very important (for alot of people including me) BitmapData class)

The Flash 9 Alpha will be available in a couple of weeks (maybe a couple of months, but it is coming out soon) on Adobe labs. That'll be free to everyone and will be well worth checking out. I'd leave it for now if you only want to use animation, though Flash 8 has a better environment.

You can use AS2 when exporting as Flash 6 though, which I don't get =\
