I've used Cakewalk for years to do just that. I've submitted a few midi file rock songs that I made on Cakewalk on my audio page if you'd like to hear what they can sound like ("Qua", "Nightmare Ash", "End of Time", also "Creepish" and "Subterranean" to a lesser extent). Click the link in my sig for those.

Many people here swear by Cubase, which can do anything and everything you'd want for midi.

you could just try power tab or guitar pro and then just type the music up in tab format. brilliant.

everyone always says the guitar is the hardest instrument to synthesize. it never sounds right. FL studio comes with some slayer guiter rifts that sound ok. I used em in a couple of my songs but people told me it sounded like...star wars? lol

Guitar Pro, hands down. Fuck Power Tab and garage band. Guitar Pro owns them all

I agree -- my belief is that you can always ALWAYS tell the difference between a synth'd guitar and a real one. But then again I'm biased by being a guitarist.

However, I've been fooled into thinking for example that a synth'd piano is a real piano, that synth'd strings are real, that synth'd drums are real, etc. So it's either that the synths for other instruments are objectively more realistic than synths for guitars, or maybe that I'm more attuned to guitar nuances than I am to nuances of other instruments.

yeah, it's almost impossible to make a guitar sound exact with a synth 'cause the synth never accounts for impendance, frequency, power levels and other such stuff.

and not to try to pimp my own shit but check the song on my audio page called guitar in fruity loops. i made it with nothin' but a synth. and that's the closest i've ever heard to a real guitar made with a synth.
