I'm not certain what applies today. But assuming that the points I earn this week derive from the latest requests, I find:
Flash: 6,5,6,6,6,6,6,6
Audio: 8,8,8,8
I think the list I posted at the top of the page should be counted for Shanus's update on Sunday. You can take your time over the stuff I listed yesterday - I think that should be counted up in 7-8 days' time.
Realistically, I don't believe your question can be answered rigorously. We know our opinions do change, but we lack reference points for the frequency & strength of intellectual events.
Well, in terms of the opinions of society, we can refer to texts etc. that point out the common thoughts.
Regarding the changing opinions of individuals, specifically myself, I put some trust in my memories of how films, music or other media has affected me on past occasions and can compare them.
I've given up being 100% accurate in my score - within a few minutes, I might change my decision and feel a score should be one higher or lower, but normally even after a year, my opinion of a flash movie normally wouldn't change by more than 2.
I think your perception that "music can be more complex" reflects your own interest in creating music. If someone were to ask me to evaluate a basket-ball player's performance in a game, I might be able to tell you if he played well or not but not much else, because professional sports bore me to death. I think this shows that our reviews reveal us through our perceptions.
Interesting point. I thought about this for quite a while, but am not sure you're right.
I'm far more passionate about games than a song and I think I'd be more prepared to give a game a score after 5 minutes, than a piece of music. (Though I do try to complete a game before reviewing.)
Thing is, I feel that with a game, though it's best to see how it works out in the later levels or after prolonged play and multiplayer games can change depending on the people you play them with, I can easily see 'broken mechanics', examples of mistakes I've seen hundreds of times before (levels focusing too much on fiero, lack of variation, repetition in action, lack of feedback or transparency of rules (where opaque rules aren't part of the game concept)) and so even after a few minutes of play, I feel qualified to at least state my opinion.
With a movie, the graphic design is there to see and the tropes or cliches used in the narrative are all there to see. Lack of consistency in design, graphical glitches etc. generally detract from the enjoyment and the narrative and humour is generally best enjoyed on the first viewing. A subtle message may take a few watches or a bit of introspection to decipher, but those are an exception.
With music, a glitch can often be turned into a feature. As music is often a background medium, I feel it should be enjoyed in the background of various situations to see how it holds up, before really taking time to fully listen and review.
I feel that the fewer elements that exist, the more each one matters and the more potential there is for outside stuff to influence the mood and enjoyment.
With a fast-tempo music video, it takes me to another world. A fast-tempo piece of music simply opens the door and I need to actually make a little bit of effort to walk through that door and somehow match the BPM in whatever activity I'm doing, as it were.
Maybe this is also partially a result of my having read shitloads of game design articles and studied graphic design, but whilst I've made a fair few songs, I just feel my way?
I joined the club to extend my appreciation of Flash art and music. I expect my opinions will change, in general, in character if not in degree, through my participation.
I have an idea. What if we allowed active members to recommend an interesting item for review (at most once a week)? I imagine that expanding our club's domain of reviews would expand our horizons and attract attention from artists who haven't noticed our club before.
I strongly approve of this idea.
here's a development:
How about anyone who had done 100% of the reviews for the previous update is allowed to make up to one recommendation for that week. This is pretty strict - essentially a new guy or inactive member shouldn't be allowed to recommend something imo. Also, I like the idea of it being a 'privilege' to be earned somehow and this way seems simple (to keep track of) and accessible (for new members).
Preferably something you think is top-notch and by an author who cares about his reviews - I assume we're all agreed on those criteria? Also, I guess to not make it too much of a headache for Shanus/Haggard, it should be something that doesn't have a hundred reviews.
Otherwise, I'd totally recommend everyone play and review Doeo.
Maybe these recommendations would only be included if there are less than... 14? normal requests.
