Real swords are made of differentially heat-treated carbon steel. The 440 steel on your's is most likely 440A. An acceptable stainless steel for knives, if properly heat-treated. But a sword for only $45 means it's not going to be heat-treated. It'll probably arrive dull as a butter-knife.

If you wanted a REAL sword, you got ripped-off.

But if you wanted something that looks good on your wall, you made a good choice! I got to admit, it does look good.

Well, I'm not planning on killing anybody anytime soon, plus that wouldn't make a very functional sword...so...that's fine. It is mostly for decoration and coolness.

I think it's $45 because it's so easy to make though.

When I want a REAL sword, I'll get one of these bad boys.

Sorry for the bad news, but ColdSteel doesn't actually make any of their swords. They contract out the job to a no-name company in Japan. Those swords in your link are barely a step above the one you ordered! (I really don't want you to get ripped-off).

Check out the Hanwei Practical Katana. It's a real sword that IS properly heat-treated (or tempered), works well and is available at a reasonable price. For that price, you get a reasonably good-quality sword. (Not great-quality, but still much better than the ones for sale by ColdSteel).

I guess you could say I'm a sword connoisseur. I mostly collect modern-day, tactical, folding knives. But one of the martial arts I've studied is Renaissance Swordsmanship. (Fencing is only one aspect of the over-all Art). I've also studied modern-day Knife Combatives. I educated myself about Swords and knives. (Especially how to tell if an example of each is quality-made, or not).

So far, the only other user I've run into on NG who knows as much as I do about swords and knives is Wade.
