There has been a huge uproar over a Spanish band recently remaking the National Anthem in Spanish, as well as a companion song, "Our Anthem." Politicians from Bush to Kennedy have decried it as what is wrong with America. "Our anthem must be in English!" they say. Minutemen and pure-bred white America (JMHX's dear, bigoted 76-year-old grandmother included) have erupted in a steaming plume of hatred over what seems to be the burritoization of the anthem stolen from the British. The anthem has ALWAYS been in English, because we speak English! At least, that's what they say.
Interesting factoid:
In 1919, the government made a spanish language version of the anthem.
Furthermore
Our beloved State Department hosts four versions of a Spanish anthem.
Looks like it isn't so unprecedented after all.

If it was just a spanish translation of the Star Spangled Banner it would be ok. It is not. They changed changed the lyrics extensively and added some political rhetoric. It may be their anthem but it is not the American anthem.
With all the Mexican flags, spanish language signs, and 'gringo go home' slogans, it is kind of obvious why they are having trouble finding acceptance into the American mainstream.

Interesting.

I've never understood why it's so controversial. I mean; do NO Americans at all speak Spanish? Is there something in the bible that says "Thou shalt not translate thy national anthem into the Spanish tongue"?
America doesn't have enough troubles, if this is such a damn high priority.
So I'm basically awesome.

Woman: Female, usually identified by having two X chromosomes in the 23rd pair.
Up: direction opposite of the prevailing force of gravity.
Now, asshole, answer the question or just save us the time and admit that your answer was flippant and ill-thought out.

It's not a translation. It is a wholesale alteration and not the national anthem.

Considering how many people know the lyrics of the english version that's a very good idea.

Nope.
It's "The Stars Flag"...
"Spangeled" presents several problems...

Why not? It sounds like a good idea to me! Who cares if it's always been in English? Besides, I like seeing people mad. So, haha Bush! :P

Erm, I think the point he was trying to make is just that Hispanics are pretty much white people.
I don't know, I never really understood racism that well.

I've seen standardized tests, polls and the like that say Hispanic (non-white).

Well yeah, but the major race variations of humans were what, Australians, Bushmen, Cauasians, Mongols and black people, right?
Hispanics would fall into the caucasian category, as do white people.

Er, sorry. Sometimes they say "White (Non-Hispanic)" This implies that Hispanics are whites, but not for the purpose of the poll or test.

Close, I was going to point out that Hispanics consist of a whole lot more than the racial diversity than the typical tejano/chicano that most people think of. They can run anywhere from blond/ blue pale white to completely black. There is even some east asian in certain areas.
I used a rhetorical question because it is always better to let someone realize something themselves then to just point it out to them.

If you came here and posted that question to a large number of people you'd get a huge number of wrong answers and an even huger number of racist answers.
America doesn't have enough troubles, if this is such a damn high priority.
No, we have so many that we prefer to spend our time squabbling over petty shit because we're too lazy to actually fix any of our own fuck-ups.
Anyway, I've always been in favour of making English the official language of the nation. If you want to come to America for a better and more free life, great for you. We're a nation of immigrants - we'll welcome you here. But you have to learn our language. Previously the majority of our immigrants already knew English. Now that they don't, the language needs to be made official and we need to start keeping it that way. We had a large amount of German immigrants at one point - they all learned English (or already knew it). All our Asian immigrants are learning it. It's not a lot to ask.
They also need to not offer citizenship tests in other languages. FOr lack of a better term, that's just plain retarded.

Canada has a french and english version, and spanish is to America what French is to Canada nowadays.

That's actually a very wise statement, considering the size of the Hispanic minority in the US.

But you must consider the size of populated Canada.
You must also consider that French was already the dominant language before the English conquered Canada.

I wouldn't call it ignorance, more like a acknowledgment of the limits of their voice. The Star Spangled Banner is a notoriously difficult song to sing.

Or maybe...
they don't actually know the lyrics?
Anyways,
my god--
Nuestro Himno isn't going to replace anything... It's a song on radio for the pleasure of people to hear.
Hardly anything to get upset about, especially if you don't hear Spanish language music.

I don't listen to spanish language music, but I watched Terminator 2 and Anaconda in Spanish. Thankfully, I could translate most of the dialogue.
