You're bringing up issues that are long dead. Do you think the Moores go to Spain and say WHY THE HELL DID YOU KICK US OUT! The land lines have been drawn for over 100 years. To say the Mexicans still have claim over it is idiotic, and to say that they deserve the same rights as American citizens even though they immigrated here illegally because of the fact that the US fought Mexico 100 years ago and took their land is also idiotic. People seem to give the US tons of shit for expanding towards the pacific, but it's the exact same thing that all the European countries did. You don't see Viking descendants bitching about the Italians fucking with the Netherlands. Of course, it happened 1200 years ago, but according to your argument, it should still be relevant. And what about the Norman Invasion? Those goddamn Frenchies fucking with England. HOW DARE THEY! Therefore, I demand we give all of England back to the Picts and just send the other's somewhere else, where they won't bother people with their "royalty" and "government."

Furthermore, the lines that designate one country from another are not what caused the plight of Mexicans. It's their shitty government. Don't try and pawn someone elses issue off on us because 100 years ago people we didn't even know, and that the majority of us weren't even related to did something that was mean and nasty and that all other countries have done since the beginning of time.

The radical Anti-Illegal would like to through all of them back into Mexico. The problem with that is two fold.

ONE: It would collapse Mexico’s economy, making it even MORE attractive to seek over here to work.

TWO: If Mexico’s economy collapses, it would incite a revolution. And if that happened it would bring for the first time in US history an openly hostile country attached to our border.

The radical Pro-Illegal would like nothing better then complete and total abolishment of immigration laws. Again there are two things that make this VERY bad (if not worse then the Anti-Illegal crowd).

ONE: Any hostile faction could and would be able to sneak into the country.

TWO: Even though people claim that the Illegals pay taxes, this is just not true. For one thing they don’t make sufficiently high enough wages to pay, so even if they file they would get a full refund. For another what they suck up in benefits and services is hundreds of time greater then the taxes they might pay.

But by that same token--
Then why are you saying to the Mexicans, "Give our land back!"

It is, after all, a dead issue--
For Moore's to complain about Spain...
and etc, and etc...

It this is the attitude that people take on Manifest Destiny and other similar issues, this-- "c'est la vie" mode of thinking--

then why do people not have the same attitude when it comes to immigrants coming over here?

I tell you why-- because it's not a "dead issue" from 100 years ago. It still effects us to this very day.

But why are we talking about this? This protest isn't about equal rights or anything... It's about current legislation against illegal immigration.

Huzzah!
I finished my 15 plus page paper on the grammar of ee cummings--
I'm gonna so have tomorrow like a holiday--

First I'll sleep in just a little. Wake up, take one hell of a delayed shower. Eat and spend all day protesting.

News:
It seems my old bank where I worked at is scrambling for replacements... It was largely compromised with Latinos and Asians. Since both are striking, the bank is effectively, more or less, closed because there are no 1.) tellers, and 2.) there's only one supervisor for the entire day. Hardly enough to make the line go fast...

That's just the point, the issues *aren't* long dead. We're addressing an enormous event without using any history as a vantage-point to see how we got to this position in the first place; with that in mind it's no wonder people are upset. The taking of Mexican land isn't even an issue so much as the irony that Americans feel that our land is wrongfully being taken from us, invaded, etc.

The United States has a blessing in disguise, people who want desperately to be Americans. People who, under the right legislation, can be put to work legally and become fully contributing citizens. This is a Godsend. People hate us out in the world today, what a perfect oppurtunity to put willing, yearning people to work to strengthen us. They're a burden on us now because the system is old and out-dated. Let them work their asses off to become citizens. If we can document temporary workers, we could even tax some of the money they send over to Mexico.

This situation is not all bad. Under the right leadership and vision, America can rewire this to work heavily to both our advantages.

Just reminding SOME people that all lest wing people want illegal immigration. In fact most of them including almost all americans (who can vote and are here legaly) Want NO illegal imigration at all. Its the dam politicions that wont do a dam thing about because if they do someting about it than there goes all thier cheap labor. Hell i my self am a moderate (aka im in the middle between democrat and rebublican) and i think that in my opinoin the only people who have a problem with this are the mexicans. No offence any mexicans but its true. I live in CA so i have my share of mexican friends and even they admit that its mostly stupiud mexicans that say nothing should be done about illegal imigration. If they want to be americans so badly then why are they waving mexican flags over thier heads and demand that they should not have to learn english or learn about our history even! they want to have citzens rights even though they dont pay taxes!!!! And the ca politicans are playing right into thier hands! You know how if you go to home depot or lowes how there are illegal imigrants waiting outside to get hired to do jobs? Well in LA the mayor is making a new law so that the stores have a covered place with bathrooms for them and to have insurance incase any illegals get hurt and these stores have to pay for it WITH THERE OWN MONEY. SOME PEOPLE ARE SO CRAZEY IN CA

Perhaps. But what about fast food workers, transportation workers and other persons who provide menial labor?

Most fast food workers are just teenagers and the like.
Yes I agree there will be minor delays but thats about it.
Boston isn't a huge forein immigrant area.
We get Pueto Ricans and some Brazilians but the usually come legally.
And there usually working Union jobs like construction worker or mason and those type of things.

It is highly important and essential to business, I would just like them to come into this country legally and try to intergrate into American society.

You can keep your culture and everything else and still become American.
The Irish for example.
They were the Mexicans of the 1800's, and tried to become American and they succeded.
They showed what the American Dream is through example.
Did they get rid of thier heritage for this,No.

Boston alone has dozens of Irish heritage clubs and activities.
Not to mention the Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Hell the whole south end of Boston was originally Irish.

Okay, let's stop beating around the bush here. Mexicans aren't coming to America because they feel it's rightfully theirs, they're coming here because Mexico, by and large, has an enormous poverty problem. This isn't about land disputes, it's not about citizenship, it's about Mexico being a shithole for people who don't have money. Illegal immigrants come to America to make use of the fact that jobs are plentiful and the US has a number of programs that assist those who need a hand. People are making it out to be over other issues, but the fact remains, the only reason why the problem exists is because of a failure of the Mexican government, we're just getting stuck with the symptoms of that problem. If this issue is really going to get resolved, maybe Mexico should stop meddling in our domestic affairs and get their own country sorted out.

Think you're pretty clever...

What... 15 million people not doing anything for 5 days in a country of 300 million. This isn't going to do any real damage, not by a long shot. Most people with the better, more important jobs will probably be working. They're just disbenefiting themselves, nothing more, and nothing less. They really don't have an argument, and they're supporting their own, horrible greed by attempting to hurt America's economy? How low can they go. This isn't even for a righteous cause.

Someone explain this to me. Maybe old age and senility are starting to affect my logic center but last time I checked, illegal immigrants were, well, ILLEGAL, as in unlawful as in criminal. How the fuck is there a need for new legislation to affect something that is already defined as being lawbreaking by it's very NAME? Maybe if they bothered to enforce the existing laws this kind of shit wouldn't happen.

That said, I'll tell you this for nowt; if the shit hits the fan it'll be deserved. Greedy companies paying slave wages have undercut the natural order of supply and demand, creating an artificially high standard of living for the vast majority. It's been a disaster waiting to happen since day one.

The only news coverage of this in Seattle is:

10s of thousands of immigrants are going to protest in Seattle, which could effect your commute.

Lets take a look at our double doplar radar to see exactly what your commute is.

Maybe if they dont get enough attention than they wont take it seriously.

Oh wells...
News as right now:

I can't get a bus to drop off the corrected essay at school... I'm waiting for a friend.

It's dead out there right now...
My friend said that International Blvd in Oakland... most of the stores are closed. Some are open, but the presence that was normally there is gone...

Today... I feel proud as an American.

I haven't noticed a single change. I've been out and about doing stuff all over town and not a single thing seems different to me. I thought maybe it was just cause i'm in a fairly small town, but my friends in Atlanta haven't noticed any changes either. Maybe people here in Georgia just didn't get the memo?

This sums up my thoughts pretty well.

I really don't know what's going on here. I live pretty far from the big cities - especially Miami - where this might effect us. I'll talk to some people that live/work in Tampa later today to see if anything significant happened. That city is highly reliant on migrant workers and illegal immigrants.

http://www.sptimes.c..of_jobs_to_go_.shtml

This prettymuch explains the entire situation very well.

Right now, especially where I live (Florida) and in some other areas of the country, the US economy relies VERY heavily on immigrants - especially illegal ones. They do our dirty work for menial wages, working around the clock with no benefits. They are impoverished beyond belief (though less so than in their home countries) and are grateful for such second-class treatment. Americans won't do these jobs because Americans are afraid to get their hands dirty. These are the same Americans, mind you, that rely completely on these people yet at the same time call for their deportation from the country and call them the scourge of the nation. It's astounding.

These immigrants come here for one simple reason - this is the land of the free. And now the economic situation is really bringing about a scenario scarily reminiscent of 1984: FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. I have thought about this issue a great deal and up to this point I've remained ambivalent - not quite sure where I stand. But over and over I come to the same conclusion: these people are economically enslaved in jobs that Americans refuse to do - and they're happy to be there. Then when these people stand up for their rights as human beings, they feel an enormous backlash from the government, the populace, and their employers. Treated as if they're dispensible to us all when in fact they're just as important to this country as anyone else.

I cannot begin to convey how disgusted I am right now. If I were in the position of these illegal immigrants I would not hesitate to participate in today's events. The crap that's being pushed through Congress is FAR more ethically wrong and criminal than the illegals themselves. Illegal immigrants did not bring this upon us - American brought it upon itself. Our laziness and refusal to fill the low-end jobs has given these people opportunities that we eagerly allowed them to take. Then when we realize what's happening we try to discard them like we don't want them or need them here.

I may not be able to empathize with this new generation of enslaved people, but I certainly do pity them.

Isn't that the definition of immigration? People haven't come over here historically because it was a kick-ass party in the "old-country" Well...except the Africans.

Ah, 200 years ago we couldn't get enough immigrants to do the work, no we're shitting ourselves trying to keep them out. You've got to admit, the irony is pretty fuckin' hilarious.

Considering I cited no specific race but rather illegals as a whole regardless of origin, it's a pretty weak response.

And an undocumented immigrant would be a legal one who'd lost his passport. Calling an illegal immigrant "undocumented" would be like calling a theft an "undocumented purchase".

I suprisingly didnt see any protesting or anything in Boulder.

I really didnt notice much anything at all actually, but then again, I really only think the urban centers would be noticebly affected for the most part.
