Newgrouds revenue idea

Now, this came to me with no reason, but meh, I wanted to write it down;

Imagine in your profile you have an option called 'Ads', if you click this option you have two further choices:

1) Sig pic
2) Sig text

If you select pic, your sig is replaced by a random ad loaded from the NG ad stores.
If you select text, the same but in text.
You can select both.

If you select the pic, you get 1 extra XP every two times you deposit.
If you select text, you get 1 extra XP every four deposits.
If you select both you can get 1 XP extra every deposit.

Your choice, individuality of expression or extra XP.

Either way NG wins with increased click through revenue?

That would acctually be a good idea, I would do it. It could reduce the ammount of these annoying popups.

im sure that tom, wade, and liljim have all said that the percent of people who go on the forums make up an insanely low percentage of people who use this site..

so this idea probably wont help because the adds wont be that visible to the masses

The only problem is that your XP would turn up in numbers that make some NG users unique, Stamper, for example.

I'm not sure that I agree with the idea as a whole, but mostly I disagree with where the money goes.

If I'm whoring my sig space out, I want money for that penetration.

XP? A fictional revenue, for giving up my ad-virginity? My ad-cherry is going to stay intact unless it's more than just my experience that's being raised, if you know what I mean.

Agreed, for many users XP isn't as important as having a space to share some link or picture.

Anyway, it's just a personal idea, so please, this isn't likely to ever happen, it was just an idea to get rid of pop-ups and provide a little extra revenue. :)

I don't think that the admins will ever adjust the way the exp rankings work. Also, the amount of traffic on the BBS is minimal compared to the amount for the portal, or individual submission pages.

I fully understand where you're coming from: a business background, trying to see how much more money Tom and Wade need.

The major problem with the idea, really, is that you would only be exposing these ads to people who are already exposed to NG's ads. It wouldn't be very much new, because anyone who was on the site already would/should be exposed already. Having sig-ads doesn't open a new exposure.

If you really wanted to raise more money for NG, you'd have to - uhhh....yeah. I dunno.
1) Charge fees for use of the BBS (against purpose of NG)
2) Charge fees for submitting to portal (against purpose of NG)
3) Install ban fines, such that if people get banned and want to lift that ban, they have to pay. That's right, damnit - pay to fucking post!
4) Offer paid training sessions on how to use flash - for games, and for movies
5) Have a donations button, and people who donate over a certain amount get some special feature (such as an option to personalize the site, or change backgrounds, or whatever)

I'm sure there's more, and many that would be more feasible.

How about during the flash submission page, you tick off a box that allows a random advert to be displayed while the movie loads? Then you could receive some sort of benefit from there. Perhaps 1 XP for every person (or amount of people) who votes on your film.

Or something that while small at first would equally build up into something quite big if a lot of people see the flash? Who knows.

this idea sounds interesting, but i doubt it will happen, as the 10 exp has been pretty set, and i think the ads thing in signatures would make this place feel like a corprate run hell hole :(

good to see people thinking to help out newgrounds, and the extra exp might be nice too ;) but i like my signature, if we all had ads in our sigs, it would feel like this place was run by robots (oh snap p-bot) :0
