That's what I say.
Say a sprite artist made a sprite movie, with every single sprite being 100% custom, making every pose himself from scratch. Would they/you still hate it, or like it?
I would not hate it at all.
I am a bit of a sprite hater, my main gripe is that a lot of people use them just because they are too lazy to either:
1) make their own sprites if their movie requires a sprite-y look to it
2) draw and animate non-sprite characters
if the movie is a tribute/parody of a video game that features sprites, or is specifically about the character, then I don't have much of a problem with it. I've seen plenty of movies where someone has used sprites from all manner of games and renamed all the characters just because they didn't want to draw their own, when it is nothing to do with that character/game.
