I have some math I need to get done but it was never explained to me.

I am on a unit called "Linear Functions and Equations".

I get the whole y=mx+b thing, but as soon as it gets to general form (ax + bx + c = 0) I just don't get it.

Ok:

Find the equation in general form ( ax + bx + c = 0 ), going through the point (6, 1) with a slope of 3.

Please show your work and explain how to do this because I really don't get it.

m=negative A divided by B
m=slope

There should be examples in your book.

Oh I love quadratic equations and alike things such as ax(squared) + bx + c = 0

We were doing them end of last year, their awesome!

I wish I had a book, but the teacher just photocopies little 8 page units out of the book and gives them to us...

alright, now find your "b".

y = mx + b
(1) = (3)(6) + b
b = -17

now that you have all that, you just have to set it up properly:
(ax + by + c = 0)

y = 3x - 17
3x - y - 17 = 0

when you have a slope and a point you use the equation:
(y - y1) = m(x - x1)
where
y1 = 1
x1 = 6
m = 3

(y - 1) = 3(x-6)
y-1= 3x - 18
0 = 3x -y -17

If you get that, you should know what y, m, and b stand for...

Find the equation in general form ( ax + bx + c = 0 ), going through the point (6, 1) with a slope of 3.

... you already know what m stands for, and m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)...

Please show your work and explain how to do this because I really don't get it.

Well, I worked it out on paper and found you a good link about converting to general/standard form.

Converting equations to Standard/General Form

Now, click here if you want to see how I worked it out.

And if you can't read the slope-intercept form I wrote you can view it here: http://www.coastal.e..thlab/HelpPages/Line

Oh get over yourselves. Both of you.
I'm sick and tired of the decidedly stupid just Googling their homework. They are stupid for lack of effort. I had a course here where I was the ONLY one NOT to rip off their homework from the internet. And it was a programming class. A JUNIOR LEVEL PROGRAMMING CLASS! I'm disgusted that they will have the same degree that I will when they graduated based on false pretenses. They took advantage of a new professor from a foreign country, just like you are taking advantage of a bunch of adolescents on a BBS who are trying to prove that they have some semblance of intelligence.

In summary, you are not smart because you are lazy, and you are lazy because you have others do your work for you.

Honestly.. Math is my worst subject, but its good to see some people trying to do some good on these forums. Nice work. You might even help a few people you didn't even know about.

Great responses everyone. Though I frown on others doing the question for you, those who posted tips and tricks for the conversion and grade A students in my book!
