Civil war is already happening. What I wonder is whether Iraq will divide along ethnic lines into three different, independent nations or a loose confederation of independent states, like the article I read in the Economist predicted a while back. I wish I could find that article.

I like the Daily Show Rob Cordrey's take on the Civil war :

Jon: Are things going well?

Rob: Absolutely. It took the United States almost a century to turn on itself; and these guys-3
years! At this rate in a couple of months they'll let black people vote. "

I must lollerskate on this matter.

Civil war has been happening since Saddam was around. Saddam did play favorites with certain factions of the Iraq population (aka killing kurds)

This is a past a regular Economic and Social Cival War that we had.

This is a Religous War, Think Northern Ireland withouth any British Control.

This is going to be a main Battle Ground between Sunnis and Shites.

The civil war as been going on since March of last year. The media just wants to make the government look bad.

There are certainly tensions between the different groups in Iraq. It is all going to depend on how their new administration ends up. The US has to do everything in its power to force them to set up an equal government, army and police force. I seriously doubt that they will set up an equal administration on their own. Thats why we have to stop pressuring our governments to get out at all costs.

If we don't make them set up an equal government, then I believe genocide could be a possibility.

I bet it is going to happen, and another person, like Saddam, will take power.

There can actually be an advantage to a Civil War. It pins extremists against one another, essential killing themselves. We can simply help one side out instead of taking on the whole country.

I disagree. Left on their own, yes, I think that civil war will definitely erupt resulting in the slaughter of the Sunni's. But if the US can force the Sheites, Kurds and Sunnis to co-operate through thereatening their economic aid, then I think they will be more open to creating equal government.

We've started it, why not do the job properly.

Yeah because you would still have Saddams Iron Grip ruling the country with the minority Sunnis controlling all power.

We should pack up, leave the country, let the Iraqis fight it out, and then come back when it is all cooled down (or maybe not at all).

If the US wants to retain any respect after this whole debacle, thats exactly what it cannot do. You do not want the World looking at you like it did after Vietnam now do you?

Stay there, finish the job we started and once its done properly we can leave.

Sounds like the drill Sgt type philosophy. Troops band together through their mutual hatred of their instructor.

Iraqi's band together through their mutual hatred of the US.

Actually, that'll probably work.....

I don't know if any of you follow international news, but yesterday the Egyptian President has declared civil war, after 30 days of non-stop violence

Iraq would plummet even faster if they were left to their own devices. Yeah sure it would be great to do that, but more civillian and military lives would be cost in leaving.

I believe it has already begun, and I highly doubt the US military is going to stop it.

LegendaryLukus:

By finish the job, do you mean rebuild Iraq to where it was before the invasion, return stability to the nation, and get a unified government in place that will serve all Iraqis equally?

If that's the case, good fucking luck...oh, and god bless america, because you're gonna need it. lol

Maybe the Kurds will surprize us all and move in when the Sunni's and Shi'as are too weak to put up a fight
