The car sped away from the carport, screaming it's nuts off in third gear.
"Put it into fourth, kid. It'll save us the petrol."
The car jerked as Nick viciously changed gear, almost pitching Gabriel onto the dashborad.
"Next time, I'll drive."
"Sorry."
"Nah, s'okay. So, any ideas where this mall is then?"
Nick looked across at Gabriel, momentarily stunned.
"What?"
Nick raised an eyebrow.
"Surely you know? I mean, don't you live round 'ere?"
Gabriel shook his head and winced. It hurt quite a bit.
"So where are you from then?"
"I'm from..." he paused.
Where am I from?
"I'm from..." he began again.
"Well?"
Gabriel's face contorted with frustration.
Think, think, think...
"I don't remember..."
Nick's jaw practically hit the floor of the car. He just looked at Gabriel and blinked.
"Uh, kid. The road?"
Nick shook his head and focused on driving. Well, half focused.
"Okay, are you from New York?"
Now it was Gabriel's turn to arch an eyebrow. He shook his head and then closed his eyes; deep in thought.
"What? I'm just trying to help! Louisiana?"
"No."
"Texas?"
"No."
"Los Angeles?"
Gabriel's eyes snapped open. Images flooded into his head.
White, black.
Not of a place.
Tall, shapely, slender.
But of a person.
Green eyes, half white hair, half black.
Beautiful.
Always yours, always.
I know.
Good. Don't forget.
I won't.
But I have forgotten
"Ayngel..." he muttered.
"Angel? Where the heck's that?"
"No! No! Ayngel isn't a place, Ayngel is a person..."
"So who is this bloke?"
Gabriel frowned.
"Ayngel is a woman."
"How long have you known her?"
"I don't know."
Nick grimaced.
"You don't know much, do you?"
Gabriel allowed himself to grin.
"Nope."
"Okay, that's a good start. So then how did-omygod!"
Nick stopped the car. Ahead was the city centre.
Apart from it looks like a few hundred bombs have been dropped on it...
The buildings were in a terrible state: many were in flames, most had been completely destroyed.
"Drive on. Nowt else for it."
The streets were lined with rubble, destroyed bits and pieces, smashed up cars...
And corpses. Lots of corpses.
Nick looked frighteningly pale. Gabriel admitted to himself that he wasn't feeling too good either.
"Wait!" cried Nick, panic creeping into his voice. "How do we know that these are just bodies and not, well, zombies?"
"I don't know. Want me to drive?"
Nick swallowed. "Yeah..."
"I'll take us through here. You can have the wheel when we're out. Just tell me where to go."
Nick pulled over so they could swap seats. Guns in hand, they got out. Nick looked behind him and gasped.
"Hey! A sports store! They may have stuff we can use! Hunting knives and stuff!"
"Will you be okay?" Nick looked as though he was getting paler by the second.
"I'll be fine. Supplies're more important at the mo'."
They both went inside. It was terribly eerie. While the building had been reasonably damaged...
They picked up some javelins, bags to carry supplies, and a large quantity of camping blades.
"You have them," Gabriel had said. "I've got plenty of my own... Wait a second..."
Nick flinched, expecting some horrid creature to leap out from somewhere.
"There are no corpses in here..."
"You're right..." agreed Nick. "Why?"
"Dunno. Let's get our stuff back to the car and we'll quickly peek inside another store to see if it's the same there."
And it was.
"What... the... fuck?"
"Bodies on the roads and just about everywhere else, but none actually inside anywhere..." said Nick.
"Yeah... Let's go now. This place is creeping me out."
Nick heartily agreed.
(( until tomorrow, kids. I'm off out. ))
