For me in the beggining it was drum and bass. But when I studied the drum patterns by listening to various songs I started making drums sounding somewhat like DrumnBass. Now I'm trying to tackle IDM and glitchcore... Pisses me off...

i believe that the hardest drums to make, in terms of makin' a drum program sound like certain drums, would be the big 80s hair metal stacked drums sound. i don't thikn that can be replicated with any drum program.

IDM and glitchcore stuff... those don't even really have a set drum pattern, it depends on how creative you are. So, it shouldn't be that hard, unless you're trying to copy someone.
Also, on the note of DnB drums... there's tons and tons and tons of possible drum patterns in that. Amen style snare, offbeat kicks, three step, jump-up style, there's so many. I love 'em.

Oh snap.
Okay, I'm on topic now. If you simply learn drums, and have many different styles of drumming behind you (yes, that also means being able to play those damned little congos...) then there is no 'hard' drum programming. It all then depends on how much time you decide to spend on them.
Yes, this goes for trance and techno too.

This sums it up. In earlier times people used drum machines for a lot of things, but now it has progressed and drum machines cease to have the capability of keeping up with a fast song.
Personally, the next and only projects I plan to release will all rearranged by symbol by hand, it is very tedius, very time consuming, and very, very frustrating. But the finished project and concept alone are well worth the effort.
Amen.

Yeah programming jazz drums is a royal pain in the arse. It has to be the hardest style to program.

Glaisne's guide to IDM drum sequencing:
Maximize your sequencer program.
Set all of your tones to glitch-type sounds.

I find it's hard to tackle the snare drum... they're fast little drums when they get to running really fast, and they're difficult to take down inside the 20 yard line because they're circular and keep doing those little spin moves. I can never tackle them. :)

Seriously though, I have a hard time getting jazz-genre drums to sound right. It's difficult to get a viable combination of them sounding busy without sounding too heavy, and to get a good swing feel happening to make the song sound convincing. If anyone has advice on this I'm open to suggestions.

Hey man, don't hate on the Grammar Nazi/'s. I was an English major... I've definitely got more than a little spelling/grammar Nazi in me. Don't hate -- appreciate.

Damnit, you beat me :P.
Though, I was going to say Mike Portnoys kit would be one of the hardest to tackle. I mean...it's fucking huge!
