All of the guitar simulators out there are shit... its better just to plug in an electric guitar up to your computer through some kind of procedure i dont understand and record it.

You can't really simulate a guitar sound well enough for it to sound real, but you could try the Slayer plugin for Fruity Loopz.
My song "Edge" was made using that plugin, it doesnt sound quite as real as it should real but it worked somehow.

Personally, I use a clean guitar with Amplitube.

Slayer 2 is good if you don't use FruityLoops. It doesn't sound completely like a guitar, but with some careful tweaking you could fool some deaf people.

Tee hee hee!
On a related note: are there any (VST or sth) plug-ins to modify the sound of a guitar input signal? Like making a sound like a bass guitar, or 12-string, or pedal steel?

Fact:

It's cheaper to buy a guitar and a quality mic than a guitar synthesizer with the same quality output.

erm theres amplitude, guitar rig, slayer 2 and real guitar, id always b inclined to use amplitude.

on a lil side note but still relevnt, if u can play guitar i'd totally recommend the digitech rpx-400 effects pedal, it's just an orgasmic piece of equipment, it has literally hundreds of presets a dedicated webpage to download patches via x-edit (a software pack u get with it), it has a 4in 4out usb audio interface plus 4in 4 out midi, it also can handle mics, lines and is brilliant as a one stop shop for a live rig when gigging, u don't even need an amp u can just jack it into the p.a. system/ a wonderful piece of kit, and yes i do own it and it cost an arm and a leg, but thats what student loans are for lol

As for computer guitar effects I think Guitar Rig 2 is awesome, and it comes with a hardware foot controller. I like it a lot better than Amplitube.

Problem:

You actually have to know how to play guitar for that option to be beneficial

Not true. One time, I recorded a 'guitar' by playing all the chords one by one while being taught from a website. I then just glued them all together and made it sound sweet.

This is a sore spot for me, and it pains me to suggest anything to simulate a guitar, but I've heard good things about a program called "Guitar Rig." I also know of a Cakewalk-sponsored program called "Guitar Pro." Both of these programs may be helpful to you.

That said, I've never actually heard either of these programs, and I strongly advise using a real guitar if you can, as I've never heard a simulator that sounds convincingly enough like the real thing to not make me cringe when I hear it. I'm not saying that one doesn't exist, but I just haven't heard one. In my opinion, guitar is one of the hardest instruments to simulate convincingly, for whatever reason (though that may just be my guitar-bias shining through).

Good luck in finding a simulator, but honestly, if you can't find one that does the job, a guitarist is always available in a pinch. (Me, for example.) If you desperately need a guitar line just give me an email; I'll consider it a public service to help wean someone else off sims. :)

Thats the problem with synthsesised guitar sounds, they never quit sound as good as the same thing.

theres one on logic 7, it even has all the sound effects like the scraping sound when you move your fingers up n down the strings and all that, but nothing really beats the real thing.
