Authors, Awards, Credits...

Well here is some exciting news... We had a user who was submitting games from Science Year and taking credit for them as his own. It turns out that NG-regular Armegalo was the guy who programmed those games for Science Year, so credit has been transfered to the proper account and all is well! Definitely play the latest game, which is fun and challenging while providing a positive environmental message:

LilJim has just finished a great new feature. Now not only can you make your own list of favorite Portal submissions, but you can also make your own list of favorite authors! If you are logged in while viewing content, you will notice this below the voting panel:

"Add to favorites: AUTHOR | SUBMISSION"

Click on AUTHOR if you want to add the author to your favorites list, or click SUBMISSION if you want to add the submission to your favorites list. Simple, right?

In other news... we are now tracking awards for the #4 and #5 submission of the day, as well as #2-5 of the week. I made little icons to go along with each. If a movie is #5 of the day or week, it will now have a visible award on the view page, whereas previous submissions have not stored that data (sorry folks, I wish it could be retroactive, but the data is off in limbo).

theres one thing I dont like about the changes and i dont see the point in it... While a movie is below 100 votes, i agree that other people shouldnt se the score but the author should be allowed to see it, it can be quite frustrating, I mean i dont wanna have to wait a few hours too see what my score is... unless you can already do this and im making a fool of myself..

Tom doesn't seem to have responded to the suggestions over P-Bot. The possible rollover window, etc.

Great Scott! That's a real shocker... it makes me suspicious of everyone else on NG... i love to bust those guys that submit stolen crap to the portal. My word of advice for you guys: DON'T DO IT... thousands will potentially view your "work" and many of them scourge the internet for flash art and will recognize it pretty fast. And my advice for the people who find the stolen goods - TURN THEM IN! Don't rely on others to do it, not everyone can identify stolen content!

Cool update, great.

Now, about that P-Bot design, I'v read what you wrote and made some adjustments.
If you're always going to keep P-Bot the way he is right now, or if I'm getting annoying with this, let me now, I'll stop posting designs.

My new idea is much like the other one. Instead of the whole P-Bot post, there would be only a P-Bot Icon ( possibly animated). At his side, the daily top 5 the way it used to be. There would also be a big "Daily top Five"( possibly flashing)and under that title, "scroll over P-Bot for more info" would be added. When P-Bot would be scrolled-over ( possibly with a little robot noise...) a gray window, the same size as the normal P-Bot post would appear on the screen. This window would cover the witdh of the screen ( minus the banners and up/down scroll bar). Users could then click on whatever links they want. This window would close whenever the pointer would leave the window.

Here's why I think this is better than P-Bot.
-( obviously) Fresh news will always be on top of the BBS, and will always be noticed upon entering NG
- It would add something special to the front page, a bit more life. The daily top five would be a lot flashier and visible more so if there was a little animation to go with P-Bot, or if he himself was animated somehow.
-With this new concept, users who don't care that much for the top 5 could be informed quickly about the new stuff and could check it out as fast as they can right now. More interested users would simply have to scroll over for the details.
-The text font would be the same size as it is now, so the window wouldn't change shape.

Well, tell me if this is any better. Are there still problems? If so, do you want me to post more ideas or just let it go?

That's great; I love it when the morons who submit stolen Flash get busted. But what happened to the user who submitted that stolen game? Did he get banned? Did he get his ass kicked? I think that if you get caught stealing peoples movies or games that you should have your NG account revoked and/or not be allowed to submit Flash to NG. One strike you're out because we gotta have zero tolerance fer people who doo stuff like that. Or do you already have such a system worked out, Tom?

I think anyone who submits others' content as their own should be banned from the site, just for the fact that they're too stupid to think up their own stuff.

I'm always open to ideas. This one looks much more feasible... Althoug I think I will be staying away from pop-ups no matter what. I think the main issue here is that people feel P-Bot's post should be slightly more compact, and not look like a regular news post. Putting P-Bot to the left side of his post is one step towards making it look less like a regular news post. The list wouldn't even need to be in a grey box.

In order to make P-Bot compact, we would have to cut back to just the top 5 list (still having room for authors' names), and most likely ditch the "Other submissions by established authors" and even the weekly update...

I'll admit, having your name on the "other submissions" list probably doesn't generate a ton of traffic for your submission - but it makes the authors feel great, and it definitely helps fans see if one of their favorite authors has submitted something new.

What if P-Bot's post stayed like it is now, but wasn't in a grey box? I don't know if it would change whether or not someone scrolls down to read more news...

I noticed Joel_Vetich is in the list (p-bot's), he stole that ASTEROIDS game!!! he was going on about BLASTEROIDS name was taken, its because the orginal creator already submitted it!!! his excuse for no proof of havin his name on the work was that "Im too lazy to write my name on my work, besides its tacky" ... im so annoyed people STEAL animations and games!!

Now that you're talking about P-Bot and the news, what about having a link in the end of the P-Bot post for the news. You know, that type of link that scrolls down to the place... I know it's just some pixels but some people may not scroll down that much.
