we like to use this.
... but if you are still in need of more opinions, I use Reason. I think the main program here is FLStudio (and one of the cheapest). If you're just getting started, I would go with either somthing free to get your toes wet, or something inexpensive like FLStuido.
If you are looking to get seriously into music, start doing research on stuff like Reason, Acid, Cubase, all that stuff. You may not get it all now, but it's a good idea to know about it. How many people use Sonar here?

I use FL Studio 5.0. It's very easy to mix beats and tunes together with, I recommend using it even if it takes a little getting used to.

FLs biggest flaw tho is that it's a pain in the ass to use if you have less than 512mb RAM

I actually understand reason, but I just hate using it. It just takes too long... I could do a piece that would take me 2 weeks on Reason to make that I could have done easier and faster on FL in 2 days or less.
FL all the way.

Lots of practice and good samples. Theory and knowledge of music arrangment helps too.

Bwahah! I have to agree with Khuskan though, if it takes you a long time to make a song in Reason then you must be doing SOMETHING wrong. It is easier in FL to map stuff down in the sequencer... but still easy in Reason also.
For the record, I composed all of my songs in under a day after I got a bassline, it's just all the automating, FX and mastering afterwards that takes so long. (Long = anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks to 2 years depending on how inspired I am to work on it =P)

I hate using the old fashion 'MIDI' sequencer. Theres a reason why I stopped composing with MIDI programs then putting them into FL and changing the instruments.

The song DOES revolve around the bassline, but if you don't got a great melody to go with it, any kind of music = shit without it.

on the topic of cubase, jeff waters, the main man from annihilator uses cubase sx to record all his records. and they have an amazing produced sound and quality.
