Alright, so I think this is kind of an ethical topic and I want to know if it's just me. There was student at my school who now has to take counseling sessions and almost got suspended because during an in class debate over morality, he accidentally said that he is on steroids and drinks. It just sorta slipped out. So the teacher is required by law to report this to whoever. Which she did... today! Tell me what you guys feel the teacher should have done.

Yeah that's what I thought and I figured maybe she would just let it go, but I guess not.

It's like not reporting him if he said he brought a gun to class. I mean the laws against drugs aren't (in my opinion) good, but you have to follow them. Laws are meant to be fought in court, not by breaking the law. Besides, he's under 18 (and 21) anyway, so even if it was legal he'd still be underage (the drinking part). So as much as it sucks for him, that's his fault and the teacher's responsibility.

The teacher is employed by the government, they can do stuff like this.
Never confide in a government agency to keep your secrets safe from a government agency.

That's because there isn't anything wrong with it. Steroids are incredibly bad for you, especially at that age. Not to mention starting drinking at that age greatly increases the risk for alcoholism and liver failure. Hopefully they'll help him get off that shit.
Think you're pretty clever...

The teacher did nothing wrong, reporting the student is the right thing to do. Drugs and alcohol can be very harmful at a young age and by reporting them to an authorities they insure that the student will get help. A student will most likely not be prosecuted for a first offense (unless they've dealing) and will most likely get off with a slap on the wrist. Something along the lines of community service, and having to go to treatment programs.

Teachers are required by law to report any danger their students may be in, whether it is drugs, domestic violence, or possible sexual abuse. If it keeps kids out of trouble, I see nothing wrong with it.

Yes, it's a good idea, even if it wasn't required by law. Teenage alcohol and drug addiction is never something that should be swept under the mat and ignored.
So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we had the key...

The teacher did what she was legally required to do. That student was an idiot for letting that info just slip out. Would you have expected the teacher to keep her mouth shut, and possibly put her career in jeopardy? For what, some dumb-ass who couldn't keep his mouth shut?

Wow, you mean teachers are actually supposed to care at your school about drugs? This is a new concept to me. Especially the fact that there is a sign that says APS policy prohibits smoking in this campus...
And there are cigarette butts underneith it.

Your 15, so assuming the kid is 14-16ish. Steroids at that level can cause some serious problems. Drinking at that age can also lead to many future problems as well. Do many kids do it? Yes, but that doesn't mean that society should turn a blind eye to it. The kid doesn't need juvie for this, he needs counseling and treatment. After that if he continues it, throw his ass in Juvie, or jail depending on his age cause he deserves it then.
Just trying to figure out why some people would think that turning him in would be a bad thing in the first place.

We have to have laws like that because teenagers are stupid. I believe most of the people who disagreed with the teacher's action proved this.

You know something is wrong with society when people are discussing if it's wrong to report someone breaking the law.
Carry on.

Not exactly....... Some laws are stupid or idiotic. Sometimes, a person has to make a conscious moral decision. Sometimes, what's legal and what's right = 2 different things.......... But this isn't one of those times! The teacher did the right thing.

That is really gay. Almost all my friends drink and we talk about it in front of my teachers and none of them care. In my health class we all told stories about what happens at parties and the teacher didn't mind. He actually asked us what goes on. I think you should only have to report a kid if the threaten their own life or someone elses.

There's a good philosophy, the teacher should just pal it up with you. Then when you binge drink yourself into a coma because your a god damn moron who doesn't even have enough sense not to broadcast you illegal weekend activities to the general public your parents can sue the teacher.
Teachers shouldn't be reporting this stuff because they are legally obligated or it's the right thing to do, if their smart they should do it to cover their asses. If I found out that my kid was shooting 'roids and openly discussed it in front of the teacher, I guranfuckingtee you that teacher wouldn't have a job anymore if they didn't tell me about it.

She might be a sniych but in the teacher's mind she did the right thing who knows what effects his steroid use would have further down the road. Besides she's employed by the goverment so she has the right to do that.
My name is pepeatumi... But you already knew that!

If the student is under the age of consent, the teacher, who as a public servant is culpable for the safety of her students, then she had no choice but to report the matter to law enforcement types. If it came out that the teacher knew of the student's drug and alcohol use, but refused to disclose it to law enforcement, the teacher would have been suspended from teaching, and it would go on her permanent record that she is an accomplice to a students drug abuse.

If what you say of your teachers is true, than that is a pefect example of what is wrong with teachers unions in this country. Teachers like that should be fired.

One I don't drink. Two we don't tell the teacher who is doing these things. Three my parents are not sue happy like the rest of America and like you. And our teacher told us that they have to report any information they hear that we do not other people. So we tell them the stories and they tell us whats bad and what not to do and why. And you right that some people take drinking to far.

:OFF TOPIC OH NOES!!!:
HEY!!! We should put this in arcade games as a valuable lesson. After all, people just love to read while playing, orpossible learning to play games on such valuable life altering tactics such as "beating the shit out of many people on screen with a freind" then "beating the shit out of your freind in a virtual world" or "beating the shit out of your freind because he cheated in the game where you beat the shit out of your freind".
Hay guys winnar don't do drugs rofl learned that from "Bad Dudes"
Hay guys never confide in a government agency to keep your secrets safe from a government agency.
See how great this is?!?!
:BACK ON TEH SUBJECT(zorz)!!!:
ANYWAYS, this brings up a good idea that I have had for quite some time (FIVE WHOLE MINUTES!!!) and thus have thought through it thuroughly. Image in a charter school where teachers are forced to keep many secrets from their parents unless it is something like "I wanna rob the pet store with a gun I painted pink so that when I shoot them they won't know what hit them"
You know, like in therepy sessions, unless they want to harm sombody then they can keep that secret. It might be a good idea, it might be a bad idea, it might be somewhere in between. This is one of those ideas that you have to fuck around with in order to really understand its full potential (Like the atomic bomb!! Yay!!!)
Well hell, I am out of shit to type.
