Most people don't know anything about the Church of the Subgenius, so here's a little info to start you out:
Wikipedia: Church of the Subgenius
Basically, it's a parody/post-modern religion that makes fun of new age religions, scientology and Christianity. Some famous Subgenii are Mark Mothersbaugh (lead singer of DEVO), Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman) and Bruce Campbell.
http://www.boingboin..e_on_subgenius_.html
One of the members, Reverend Magdalen, recently lost custody of her child because the Judge decided that the events that go on during X-Day celebrations are evidence of “severe mental illness”
Rev. Magdalen has a page on the Subgenius website devoted to this whole situation and has a full explanation of the custody battle.

I wish I lived in a country that had separation of Church and State.

it just seems like a ridiculous parody of all the bullshit that other religions like scientology talk about and it isn't meant to be taken seriously, i think its unfair that hes lost custody of his child because of this.

So religion is a sign of "mental illness" huh? It's about time someone other than me started saying it!
Now, let's get those children out of the hand of those dirt christians, muslims, jews, buddhists, hindus...

If we join, do we get free tee-shirts? Cause I would totally blow off my god for a free tee-shirt.
Anyhow, if the guy has mental illness, of most kinds (some may be exempt), then he shouldn't be given full custody of his kid. Especially if he's unfit.
So I'm basically awesome.

What an uptight prude of a judge. I only looked through a couple of the pictures folders, and nothing struck me as overly OMFG.

Thats a SICK religion. I may even send in $30 bucks to see what the hell this is about. Ive been reading their website and it is SO funny. Some gems.
"Bob" is an idiot. They even say so. They say they dont want you to worship "Bob", they just want you to treat him as a "Short Duration Personal Savior". that means they dont want you to take him seriously.
They also have a sacrament called Excremeditation. They seem to think that the use of the toilet is a holy thing. I said theyre filthy; well their scatalogical tendencies are obvious. Theres even a "cute" little picture of a plumber pointing to a toilet and saying, "My Constipation worries are over!" The toilet is smiling too.
From a Christian
Many times an acolyte in the Church of the Subgenius has asked, "What is
it that makes these straps so special, anyway? How are they different
from these handcuffs I got from the police station the last time they
arrested me for threatening a public figure?"
Hemp is the only one of the Straps to impart the Sacred Rope Burns.
These most visible marks of enlightenment also provide the most negative
feedback from normals, so when one wishes to repel normals this ritual
is recommended.
The iron has been observed to have its greatest
effect when cold, however. Shrinkage of certain body parts often
occurs, nipples often become erect, and goosebumps form.
Plastic represents the modern and innovative nature of the Subgenius.
It is also frequently transparent, allowing easy view of body parts to
the voyeuristic and serving as a reminder that nothing can be hidden
from the Third Nostril of "Bob". Its synthetic nature reminds us that
not all truth comes from the wilds, but further that we can either
enslave technology, be enslaved by it, or best yet, both simultaneously.
A variant of the Plastic Straps is Saran Wrap. This allows a VERY snug
fit, but does not allow for the passage of oxygen in most cases.
Mishaps with Saran Wrap can serve as a reminder not to be smothered by
the Conspiracy.

I wasn't aware Christianity was a new age religion?
Crap, we just can't fucking please you people!! First you bitch that we're too old to be any good, we don't change and we're an ancient and archaic belief. Now you say we're young guns that are just looney like Scientology?!?!?! I can't believe you fucks compared us to SCIENTOLOGY!!!!!
There's just NO pleasing you people, fine then! Time for another "Crusade" against the "unholy ones"! You bastards had it coming, our patience is now at zero!!!

That's what I get for only reading the stuff about the religion and not the case. Meh. I'd just thought that I should add something to validate my post.
Anywho. She got nude at a convention, and dressed like a whore. Her daughter was around. Does that justify a mental illness ruling? Fuck no. It's just irresponsiable in some people's eyes, and their opinions are not so important that they are law. If the judge is so highstrung that they think it is, they're an ass.
So I'm basically awesome.

The judge is obviously a far right wing 60+ year old prude who hasn't gotten laid since making his son and daughter. (because it's evil otherwise) This isn't an issue of sanity, it's a straight out extremely biased denial of civil rights. I really wish I could've seen this done, it would've been hilarious. Along with being much more sane than believing Jesus could've been created with only 50% of the materials needed to create a human child, and the earth is only about 6000 years old.

Why is it any fucking business what this woman does in her private life? The same bias could be applied to porno stars who do much worse things in front of a camera, than this woman did.
This is an outrage. Seriously this judge needs to be fired.

The whole Subgenius concept is a big joke. But some people, I'm sure, take it seriously. They sell 'masters" and "doctoral" degrees. Lol.

So basically everybody is basing their opinion on the word of the woman who lost the custody battle, and she has no bias at all right? Come on really, she lost the custody battle and is bitter at the judge, and her ex. So she's going to do everything in her power to spin the whole situation to make her look like the victim. It's not that hard to compeletly spin a situation, it can be done with a simple change of word choice (example ). So I'm going to try and find some external links to either prove or disprove her story; I suggest in the intrest of fairness other people should try to find external facts about this case.

for 30 bucks you get a copy of the two sacred pamphlets, an excuse(plenary indulgence), a Doktorate in the forbidden sciences, a "Bob" sticker, a bumper sticker, a bunch of other flyers, a neat folder, and a button.
I'm pretty sure that's it, but there might be more.
Both the book of the Subgenius and "Arise" are completely crazy. The book of the subgenius is just page after page of insane explanations of the nature of Subgenius superpowers and revalations about the Apocalypse (July 5, 7AM 1998). The pages are filled with awesome illustrations too.
"Arise" is pretty much the same insanity, but in movie form.
All in all, it's unlikely that the average person will spend more than 100 dollars on Subgenius stuff, maybe a little more if you buy a bunch of clothes from them,
Just think, for 30 bucks you could instead get tricked by fancy packaging into buying a crappy video game or buying the special directors cut edition of a mediocre movie.

Ooh. A doktorate. I'm sure EVERYONE acknowledges that...
Seriously, this is not a religion. It's like scientology, except a parody of it, though you spend about as much money.

I would buy a book. Or two. Or get some food. Can't go wrong with (most) food.

You must either be overestimating the amount of money Subgenius costs, or way way underestimating the amount of money Scientology extracts. Subgenius is an extremely inexpensive religion. the 30 dollars is really the only mandatory expense, everything else is pretty much optional. The movie can easily be found for free (and with the permission of the creators), check google video for "subgenius" to get an idea of what this is all about.

Curiously enough, that opinion is shared by the Church of the Subgenius. I'll take luck over brains any day.
