Yes, but preemptive strikes tend to backfire <cough>iraq</cough>.

But Israel's 1967 preemptive attack worked wonders, as did the "Raid on the Sun".

War is VERY profitable, if you have connections. Halliburton, for one, is making out nicely. The government doesn't make money, but the defense industry does.

War isnt generally profitable for the government, but it is for the corperations.

As with oil, sure it may be only a portion of your oil (but 25% is still a huge amount of oil) but its still important. But even more so then guarentting you a cheap supply of oil, you can prevent your enemies from getting it. Oil drives economies and militaries. without it neither can function. China at the moment is fairly dependent on Middle eastern oil, although they are looking to get mroe from places like Russia, Canada, Kazekstan and other places.

While they are dependent on ME oil right now, control that supply and you can choke the Chinese economy.

Keep in mind, that would cause more problems than it solves. Everyone would be pissed, and its so much area to cover, its impossible to control.

A war not only has to be profitable, it has to practicle.

Note: Iraq wasn't preemptive.

Sure it was -- look at all those WMD stockpiles we discovered. They proved Saddam would imminently attack us!

I think the current iraq war is just a reason to bring the fighting spirit back to america, I think the world has learned its lesson with war and so there hasn't been much reason to fight anymore. Pre vietnam there were good reasons to fight as americans because there was a real threat and real despisable acts that the whole world wasn't blind to, we through down some huge ass bombs and that told the world don't fuck with us and it was written in history so nobody has. Vietnam we found that international politics could lead us to war, so we learned from history again and avoided places in politics that would lead us down that road again. Then too long went by without a war and somewhere it clicked that america is at its strongest after a war and if we aren't fighting someone else we're fighting eachother. So a new reason was created to goto war and we went, but a little too late had we gone into iraq say 1981 and done what we're doing today the world would sit back and say about time. Now we have ourselves in a shitty position realizing that we're in a position of can do no right and no matter what war it is we're in we'll be held as bad guys unless ofcourse it's another civil war, where I believe the right(as in conservatives of all forms) will win and again we'll have real reasons to goto war and the whole thing will start again and continue till the earth blows up.

Keep in mind, we wouldn't need to control your whole country, just the parts with oil.
Keep in mind, everyone's already pissed at us, and ain't much resulting from that, so what's the difference?

Gee, I guess September 11th was just a couple poorly piloted airplanes, huh?

We fight so as not to come off as weak girly-men. If our president said of September eleventh and the twin towers by saying "awwww.....fuck it" Al-Qadea and Hezbollah and Fatah and all those other terrorists would be emboldened to launch even more terror attacks and kill even more people. If the American juggernaut ignored the challenge of the terrorists on 9/11, countries like North Korea, among others, would attack America with weapons of unfathomable destruction. I think America did the right thing by taking over Afghanistan.

Hezbollah and Fatah and all those other terrorists

Why do you consider Hezbollah and Fatah terrorist organizations? I can see why you might consider Hezbollah, but Fatah?! They are not even remotely terrorist.

They are terrorists. Here's the proof. Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

Even the US State Department does not consider them a terrorist organization:

http://www.state.gov..ls/fs/2002/12535.htm

Many of the organization that claim to operate under Fatah are not recognized by Fatah, such as Black September (operated mainly in the 1970s), Hawari Special Operations Group, Tanzim, Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Abu Reish Brigades, Fatah Hawks and Force 17. The Black September group was even outlawed by Fatah.

If you meant that Fatah hasn't done anything since the late 1980s that was connected to terrorism, then I apologize and concede that you have made a valid point. I was thinking of past incidences, like the Yom Kippur War, but I realize that happened decades ago.
