Wait a minute my friends... before you bash me. I am well aware that there is a specified topic set out for Collaborations... but ths idea would not accomidate such unvisited terrain...

I have... an idea.

I propose we start... the Ultimate Collaboration of music... the greatest the audio portal has seen. And here's how I propose it works.

The basic idea behind it... is that one person starts off about 10 -30 seconds worth of music. Being sure to stay within a predefined key and tempo. Then... another artist will come... and add from where that artist left off. Then another. Until we have an ultimate chain of music created by Newground's most talented artists. The music can go in any direction... it will be like playing the one word story game. But the next chain must flow with the previous one... or it will not be added to the chain.

How will this monstrousity be constructed in an orderly fashion?... well I or someone else can create a temporary independant website... that will feature all the information on this collaboration... as well as the progress of the piece.

I have no idea if this has been proposed before... or if it's within your interests... I'm putting forward building blocks for you fine people to expand upon... or smash down. That's what forums are for right ;)...

but all those other collaberations were large scale to the extreme! Like, lets all make one uber song together!

I think if there were three of four people to get this started, it would probably get quite interesting.

Everyone would need the same software, be good at it, a method of transfering the track, any extra VSTs/samples you use between each other... it is just too large scale to work, not like flash collab.

good point khuskan. but what if everybody made their parts, exported 'em to mp3s, and then one person was in charge of compilin' all the parts together? that would work. of course it would be insanity though lol.

thats how me and Milkman_Dan do our collabs. He exports a tune, chucks it over to me, I add my own layers, and I export it again, and there you have it.

Though because we are both classical composers, our sounds were not too different, so I can understand what your saying Khuskan.

It would be HORRIBLY unsmooth, even if all the parts were right, quality would be lost quickly, and mirroring an ever-increasing mp3 file back and forth could be described as nothing else but a nightmare.

haha... clearly I don't check out these forums enough to know what has and has not been done before. Never the matter.

As someone suggested... compiling each piece into mp3's and having someone splice them together... WOULD NOT... be difficult... it truly wouldn't. I do it all the time. So long as the next addon sounded similiar to the previous with the same key and tempo. Any artist who cannot make a piece play in a certain key and tempo, would simply be exempt from such a project.

The challenge is making your piece flow with the previous one. And that's just what it is... a challenge. Imagine this collab moving from Classical to techno to rock and to drums and bass in one flowing piece. It can be done, it would simply rely on the artists being able to pick up from where another left off... if this cannot be done... that is unfortunite but I know there is some serious Grade A talent here. I'm willing to do my part... it's a matter of participation.

But again... if this is an unpopular idea... that's fine. I have a dream.... :).

P.S. MaestroSorrow... you have had plenty of time with that collab :P... bout time I heard the results don't you think?

Not really, as long as there is a set BPM the songs could simply be mixed together cutting and pasting and fading in cubase, for example. Songs with few instruments could even perhaps be mixed as one, there could be a simple beat that follows the whole song and so on. There are limitles options, all it takes is effort. Alot of effort. :)

i'm in. all i need to know is waht tempo and key. and one more question, should it just have a consistent drumbeat the whole time or should we make our own drum beats for our parts and how long should the parts be.

To answer your question MHB... one consistant drumbeat would be too limiting and ultimately a pain in the ass to put in... soooo... the drumbeat will be up to the artist... so long as the transition stands to be pleasant it shouldn't be a problem. Well that's two people in... any other takers?

Two collabs were started last year in the summer, they both had their own file sharing websites where artists could unload their MP3s and then arrange pieces of their songs.

They both failed because everyone has different arrangements, samples won't show up the same, which means when it comes someone's turn to program, they couldn't see how previous work was done and where everything was, so even if you do rotate samples, it won't make up for actually being able to disect it, which is fundamental to any collab.
