WOO! Another faghag!
As a bi-girl...I'm surrounded by gay men. Surrounded. SURROUNDED. A great percentage of my male friends are gay.
I think it's because they're non-threatening. All my straight guy friends have asked me for sexual favors at one time or another.
My boyfriend, however...is straight. WOOHOO!

For the same reason that only Italian-Americans can call each "diego" and that only black-Americans can call each other "n*gg*r". Only women can call each other "bitches" and only LBGT people can call each other "queer" or "fag". I know gay men that affectionately call their friends "fags" but if a straight man said it... there'd be hell.

Awesome!! Same with me! My boyfriend straight but alot of my friends are gay and almost all my friends-who-are-girls are bi or atleast bi curious. I think a lot of girls are bi. I wonder why it seems that there are more bi girls than lesbians and more gay guys than bi guys?? Maybe thats just my limited perspective being wrong. Any way rock on. :)

Ok then. I guess all those groups can continue reenforcing stereotypes about their own groups. Just seems pointless to me. By the way, I’m part Italian, and if Dean Martin himself called me a diego I’d stab him in the face with a soldering iron.

Actually, you're both right, and both wrong.
It depends on how it's used. I call my gay friends 'queer' or 'fag' all the time, but it's affectionate. Same with some straight friends, that call the same gay friends 'fag' or otherwise.
Honestly? I think it's all in the perspective of who's being called that. They have the choice of taking it how it is...as a joke or a term of endearment, or they can freak out about it.
I think what upsets me the most is the abundance of insults that people throw around, using 'FAG!' and 'UR SO GAY' as if it's a bad thing. Ever hear the John Lennon song, 'Woman is the Ni**er of the World'? That's what's happened with the word 'fag' or 'gay'. It's thrown around as an insult, and no one thinks twice, just like the word 'ni**er' was used. It's sad to think so many young people are so ignorant to that.
DISCLAIMER: That is actually the name of the song. I HATE the 'n' word, and I'd never use it otherwise, but that's the title. It's not meant to offend.
(small edit) WOW! I'm impressed! I actually tried typing out the title of the song, and it wouldn't let me post! I'm very impressed. :)

It pisses me off. Of all the things we're allowed to say on the NG BBS, that word is not one of them. I hate that word, and I don't use it, I've never called someone that. I've tried to write the word a few times in an academic sense (as in the article about the school teacher using a certain book for class) and everytime it won't go through. I hate having to sensor myself.

You're pissed off about having to censor yourself? I think it's a small price to pay when it's such an inflamatory word, and spurns such hatred. It's also easily remedied by typing it out the way I did. If you're truly wanting to use it in an academic sense, your point would get across just fine.

My point was that it is censorship, and NG is pretty anti-censorship. I don't use the word and don't mind using ***, but it's more the principle of the matter that bothers me.
