you can do it with cool edit pro - but you need to isolate parts of the song that recur thoroughout the entire song and use that to strip all instances out.. oh wait thats to get vocals out of a song..
I dont know - because an mp3 is a merged down version of what would have originally been 2 tracks layered on top of each other - the vocal tracks and the karaoke tracks.
There are karaoke versions of songs out there - you just have to find them :P

One method which sometimes works is to open the file and invert one of the channels.
Only one - either the left or right... Don't expect great results though - this method only works about 20% of the time.
The thinking is that the music will normally be stereo while the vocals will be centered - when you invert one channel, the inverted vocals on the left will cancel out the normal vocals on the right decreasing or in some cases completely eliminating the vocals while leaving the music intact.
The reality though, is that the music will in most cases be noticably altered and the vocals, while reduced greatly, will still be audible.
This process will also usually fail if there are any effects applied to the main vocals - like reverb.
Good luck...

Yeah - that sucks... sometimes it works - most of the time it doesn't... I'll keep an eye open though - if I come across any reliable ways to remove 'em, I'll post it up.
Good luck in your search.

The best way to remove vocals it to beat the fucking shit out of your singer, then when he's unconcious, throw his ass in a river and let him drown. He will never sing again... Just like that fucker from my ex-band...
Get some lol's down you.

....that still doesnt solve the real problem, you need to get the lyrics out of the songs ALREADY made.....however, there are some artists in this world....i wouldnt mind letting them drowned....by my hand....in a cold river.

Open up a 24 bit wave file of it and filter out the frequencies for the song......
24 bit waves are easier to work with than 16-32 bit or an mp3 file
32 bit floating point is good too but only use it if your soundcard can support it.

Basicaly speaking, if you have a recording which has the sound of a gunshot in it, if you have the same sound of a gunshot on its own with no backing, you can use that to 'subtract' the sound from the first recording. It's pretty complicated though...

Even if you've never seen a piano before, it HAS to be obvious where the keys are... They're the only white thing on the damned instruments.
Unless you have a white grand... *drool*

They'll make you pay. Litteraly of course, and it will probably be a LOT more expensive if they know you're using it for public peformance.

Well... audio engineering and music theory, while somewhat related, aren't exactly the same thing - btw - Chron - I'm not cracking on you or anything I'm just commenting...
Filtering freqs can help, sure, but the problem is that yu can't just filter out all of the possible frequencies that make up something as dynamic as a voice - in the process of removing the vocals you'd destroy the instruments as well...
If anyone out there uses Aufition you can run a few tests - record a minute or two in a relatively noisy room - by noisy I mean run a fan or two so you'll get constant lf noise in the background.
Be sure to get a few seconds of just the noise as well. You can play with capturing noise recuction profiles (by selecting an area with just the noise you want to remove) and applying that to the whole wav. Your noise will be gone if you did it correctly but it'll completely fuck up the parts that you probably want to keep too. It'll sound grainy and choppy and often it messes with the dynamics to the point that you can't even re-adjust them to correct it...
Shit... where the hell was this going... I have no real clue...
Oh yeah - I remember now - Music theory huh? - for anyone who'se wasting their time reading this - I have a theory for you - your music sucks... ha ha

you're right lj and khus - ive doen that in cool edit to stuff i record on my webcam - I simply rerocd something - leave some silence at the end - isolate that - use it as a sample and then apply it to what i recorded - and voila - perfectly recorded stuff!
works like a charm..
