The politics forum's best loved parody thread

The thread that raised the question for me.

Growing up in a fairly tolerant home, I have always been taught that masturbation is 'yukky', but not exactly a sin. You wouldn't talk about it in front of a class of small children, but you wouldn't burn in hell for it either.

However, in the thread I reference, people suggest that the Bible says it is wrong to masturbate. I'd seen this view bandied about before, but always assumed it came from the crazy fundies who thought gravity was a result of 'intelligent falling' or some equally banile theory. Seeing it repeated on Newgrounds made me think there may be more intellectual/popularist weight to it.

So, rather than start an argument, I'd like to hear from anyone who thinks masturbation is actually a sin - that is, an affront to God. I'd like to know if you think the same about wet dreams, or just fantisising about a girl.

Cheers.

Masturbation is a sin. It actually imcompasses multiple sins fromt he 7 deadly sins. Lust(obviously), sloth (too lazy to find a partner), glutony (induldging in an act which you need not to) and vanity (you are loving yourself).

Agreed.

sloth (too lazy to find a partner)

I don't know if I'd agree with that. It's not "too lazy to find a partner" because it's not laziness that determines whether you have a sexual partner. Furthermore, fornication is a bigger sin that masturbation. And that's showing that you're not "lazy" for finding a partner, you're simply fulfilling carnal desires with another person without marriage.

glutony (induldging in an act which you need not to)

Gluttony really includes food. And it only refers to things when you overly take what you don't need. You can eat until you're full, but eating beyond that is simply not necessary. You're taking away the food another person could enjoy. It's living in over opulence. Masturbation, to me, doesn't seem like a very opulent act.

and vanity (you are loving yourself).

Meh, people masturbate who don't even like themselves. It's basically something to get out. But, sometimes, people are really into being like "I'm so hot" so I'll give this to you, but only on rare occasions.

-------------------------------

Now, according to the Catholic church, masturbation is a sin because it's not only because it's a purely self-fulfilling act: the act of pleasuring yourself simply because of fleshly desires, but also because a sperm is considered half a human. You need a sperm and an egg to complete a baby, and, I'm sure at one point, they considered the sperm more important than the egg because men posessed it. Anyway, Catholics don't really look down on masturbation now. There are some religious sects of the monestary that absolutely frown upon it because of the "pleasures of the flesh." However, knowing our understanding of the world now, and knowing it's healthy for men to masturbate, I think the Church really doesn't have a strong stance on it anymore.

I would go with "yukky" but not actually a sin.

Seriously though, it's a grey area. No holy book specifically condemns it but have passages that could be interpreted as condemning it. Self-gratification should generally be kept to a minimum, and masturbation is certainly wrong when accompanied with pornography. Muslim males had slaves jack them off.

From what I've heard, according to the bible all sins are viewed equally sinful.
None are worst, none are better.

Holy Crap peeps are you seriously arguing about whacking off?

Simply put masturbation is a healthy normal process.

The Fact that the catholic church fundys think that its a sin and that you are going to burn in hell for it, just goes to show how brain washed they are by the church. In my opinion I honestly think the church wants all its patrons to get their Jollies off of God or Jesus or something.

I am not against it, but I also think it can be a very dangerous act.

The point being, is that masturbation in small terms doesnt hurt anyone. It reliefs stress or pressure. But constant or frequent masturbation does more than that, it fills a hole that could only be filled with another partner.

But once that hole is filled, the actually priority of finding a partner doesnt become number on the list.

Next time read the actual thread before you speak. It's not a discussion as to whether masturbation is wrong or right. It's a discussion as to why some churches think it's a sin.

Get on the train.

You have to be kidding me. You're saying that someone would feel that masturbation fills the need for companionship? Finding a partner isn't for sexual gratification. You might as well hop around having sex with anyone if that's what it was all about.

Ironically, I count five grammatical errors in that sentence alone.

No. No denomination in the entire world believes that. Not even one person has ever told me "You know the problem with you Christians? Your womenfolk aren't hung very well". Maybe you should try holding what we on the forum like to call an 'informed opinion', whereby you actually read a topic before writing whatever bullshit fills your head?

On a more intellectual note, most of you seem to say it is 'traditional' that the Church is anti-masturbation. Would you say the same holds true for their stance on pornography?

Err... I don't know where you heard that one, but I can speak as a "fallen" Roman Catholic.

Masturbation is called Onanism or The Sin of Onan. This is where they get their stance against contraceptives, masturbation, and coitus.

Basically Onan marries his brother's wife Tamar. He doesn't want to create a kid, and so when he sleeps with her he ejaculates outside of her.

God is upset that Onan doesn't want to take over his brother's responsibility, so he kills Onan.

On an interesting note, Tamar does conceive a child by "prostituting" herself to a king. This child will be important to the lineage of the House of David and eventually-- to Jesus Christ.

I guess everyone has a spotty heritage here and there.

Pleasures of the Flesh? If masturbation and sex in general was really a sin, then over 90% of Earth would be sinners. Masturbation is not hurting, oppressing, or killing anyone. Masturbation is normal and healthy. And no, it does not cause blindness. That was propaganda meant to prevent people from masturbating.
I have always wondered why religious extremists view pleasures of the flesh are sinful. Sex and love for your patner will not lead to damnation. Rather, masturbation and sex in general is a gateway to one of the greatest miracles of this Earth; having children and creating human life.

Then hell is full, man. Listen,if what your saing it's true, than almost everybody in the world is going to say hi to the devil. And i don't think theres enough sits for that amount of people! If god gave us life, then he'll want us to enjoy it,now,i'm not saying that masterbation is the best way to enjoy life, but we should live life to the fullist. If theres masterbation in this cruel, empty world, than is there for a reason.Imagine how much more rapes would happen if there was'nt a way for people to let go of that sexual frustration.

Almost everyone who says that masterbation is evil usually point to Genesis 38 lines 8-10. At first it would seem that G-d struck Onan for masterbating, but when taken in closer examination, he is not swtruck down for that, but for disobeying a direct order. I believe that the bible leaves that question to be wholly unanswered.http://www.biblegate..er=38&ver
