Basically the Chinese don't want their children influenced by foreign cartoons like Teletubbies, blues clues, space jam, etc. because they want to promote the growth of their own animation industry. Since Communism is the government over in China, they can do whatever they want to their citizens, including filtering out what they get to see on television.

I would ban teletubbies from my home, if I ever have kids. I say they deserve better.

Not that I agree with China's decision, but it's not like the Chinese banning things is anything new.

srsly, that show should be banned from everywhere and the producers should mysteriously disappear and end up in a dump a few years later

cultural preservation, most likely, that and economical preservation

From the article :

"Communist authorities are eager to expand the country's animation industry and also are worried about the influence of foreign pop culture on Chinese children"

Wounderful. I hate cheapass cartoons. and i hate it when animators are too lazy to make real movies and try to do a roger rabbit type thing. I did like roger rabbit though, it was a great ORIGINAL idea. But it is over used by disney now days because they hate children but still want their money, so they have been makeing remakes and other half assed movies.

The cartoon ban is intended to "promote the development and prosperity of the cartoon industry in China," said the statement issued by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

Didn't the United States do something like this back years ago to protect the Harley motorcycle company from going out of business? You know, like a restriction on foreign imports so that Harley could have a chance to compete?

Protective tariff, yeah, we've done stuff like that for awhile, but we haven't banned something outright.

I thought we banned the import and use of foreign made steel in our nation's buildings and the like.... but at least I got my point (somewhat) across.

China just wants it's culture to be protected, so it's doing what it can to protect it. I with everyone else on this issue, China's actions are a leeetle bit extreme in this case, but honestly... who here is going to loose sleep over the Teletubbis and Blues Clues being banned in China? Hm?

*rhretorical question*

Whatever happened to good quality children's shows like Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers?

It's not our fault that their culture is inferior.

Isn't this kind of what the French do? Trying to protect their culture and their language from American Influences? Banning Teletubbies ... banning words ... it's all pretty much the same thing.

I hate teletubbies, I find it disturbing.

So what if China bans it, why do you feel the need to go off on one?

Not really that surprised, we have an area that does the exact same thing in Canada.

It's called Quebec.

I think China banned teletuies because they wanted to decrease population, in other words, they think that by not letting children letting teletubies, children get upset adn cry, wich parents hate. So they might not have kid's or something like that. And I fully belive that is bullshit.

Double correction, the Chinese government hates capitalists.

Why teletubbies? Because Americans that are capitalists are gaining money from it.

Why, why, WHY??? Because Chinese are communists that are counter with capitalists.

Isn't China both capitalist and communist? They promoted capitalism a while ago to help shape up their economy.

Yep. In fact, they're becoming more and more capitalist. Their capitalist sector is what's keeping their country's head above water fiscally speaking.
